Looking to set my dad's old marlin up with some boolits, since the Winchester silvertip ammo he loves Is almost extinct. Any suggestions on a good boolit for this rifle? No I have not slugged it yet, just told him today I would try and work up some good white tail loads for him. He's looking for good expansion, and good grouping.

lee makes a 170.
rcbs makes a 150 and a 180 they generally pour a little heavy.
lyman makes the 311041,and the 311291 and a few others suitable.
you'll probably want a 311 body and a nose in the 301+/- area.
the nose is more important, make sure it engraves the rifling when you chamber it but comes back out of the rifle.
the rest is just putting some powder in a case.

I've been happy with the Lee 170 gr. FN. I shoot it with the gas check left off and tumbled lube in my Sav. 30-30 pump gun using 7.0 grs. Red Dot for a light plinker/small game load. Or I apply the gas check, pan lube it and push it up close to 2K fps. using H-335. I also like the Lee .314 PB TL 90 gr. SWC sized to .311 and 3.0 grs. of Alliant Bullseye for some plinking and small game loads.

There are many other mold options and powder combinations that work well with the 30-30. The above combinations are just the ones that work well and are economical for me.

I am in the same boat and wonder what diameter the Lee molds cast at.

Anyone have any experience with the molds offered by accurate molds in 30-30? I see he has 3 different 170gr. versions in his catalogue specified for the 30-30.

As mentioned the 311041 is the standard others cast bullets try to emulate in 30 cal, especially for the 30-30. Hard to go wrong with the 311041 or any of it's facsimilies.

The Lyman 311041 shoots great in my Marlin and in all of my 30 cal. guns except my Sav. 300. The Lee 309-150 also shoots good and is the best in the Sav. 300

Getting ready to try this out in good old treinta-treinta. 31141HP but probably not very easy to find.

that mold you cut looks like it will be a good one.
if you don't like the way it turns out...
i have a tight 7.5 that would probably like a slightly undersized 2995 ish nose just fine.
the 311041 is pushed below the neck when i chamber the round in it but it still shoots pretty darn good.
if it pours a bit too big you could make a nose sizing die and get it correct with little extra work.

He makes good moulds. I'd probably get it cut to drop .313 in the bands with #2 and go a little larger than .300 in the nose. That meplat is bigger than the RD which shoots good in my 336. Seated to the groove, the RD engraves the nose so I have to tap a chambered round out. I just carry a brass rod with me. You can send him a chamber cast of your rifle - won't cost any more.

Dollar for dollar, it is tough to beat a Lee. Not fancy, but very functional.

I thought about a nose size die. I had to make one for a boolit I use in my BPCR.
I am staring at the hunk of stainless I need to cut for the sprue plate. I need one of those band saws.
