I got a new mould for 45-70 that has a gas check base of .425". Bought a box of Hornady 45 cal checks. They don't crimp on when I size the boolits to .459". It appears the OD is .460, so sizing to .459 isn't crimping them on. Anybody else run across this problem? What checks did you end up using? Thanks

Open up the mold a little at the gas check shank, use a peice of emery rolled up and turn it by hand. Real easy, only takes a few minutes.

That's not the issue - thickness of the check is what's causing the problem. I'll just have to find a check with an od that will crimp on base.

I guess I don't fully understand the question, but the first thing that popped into my head was a question. Did you buy gas checks made for 45 RIFLE boolits? See this, post #2:

If you have 45 pistol boolit gas checks, they would present the problem you mention. If you have 45 caliber rifle gas checks, the shank is very slightly undersize and might improve is you enlarge the shank slightly.

I grabbed a few more samples and made some more measurements. The mould drawing showed a meas. of .425" for the shank, and I guess I just assumed that was standard size. Of the few boolits I measured, I found that the shank was around .424", and a few were actually .425". Another careful measurement of the OD on the checks around the taper shows around .4625, so opening up the shank a little bit would seem to be the answer.

I suppose if I check the mould I might find that one side is a little smaller than the other, too.

Thanks for the help! - both of you...

FWIW, I emailed the mold maker and he recommended I go with Gator checks, or I could send the mold back and he could open it up a bit. So I think I'll try the Gator checks. If I want to size a little bigger than .459 I would have the option.

Also ran across the Pat Marlin checkmaker - might have to look into that...

Here's the boolit, 460-405A from Accurate Molds. I just love these molds - they drop good looking boolits right from the start...56675
