View Full Version : What is the most molds per caliber you own?

asp

For most calibers that I cast I only have 1 and sometimes 2 molds. The outlier: I have 6 molds that drop 6 different boolits for .38/.357.

I've got onesies and twosies of quite a few calibers, but I'm pretty sure I have more of .30 caliber than any other.

On average 2 . I was just adding them up,looks like 355-60 is the high roller

I have a bunch of molds...but usually only a few examples for each caliber. Used to maintain a couple dozen .38/9mm molds...but I've paired it down to 7 I actually use. 7 .30 molds as well. A good deal I've traded off and the rest are with my Dad and Brother...so if I ever got the inkling to give them another try I can always "borrow" them back. I'm sure the number will balloon back up in the future, but for right now I'm pretty well covered for what I actually shoot. Couple guys on here probably have over 30 .38 molds and counting...

Its no fun to own the rifle if you dont have the mold/molds...Lost count of the 30's long ago.

I voted 2.
Mostly 2 or 3 per caliber, but I have five 45 cal and seven 35 cal.

20 unique designs for 38/357.

In the big picture, my 4 cavity 358429 and 6 cavity Lee C358-158-SWC cover the majority of the work.

Caliber has alot to do with it.
In 30 caliber, the range of requirements makes me feel like I'm missing a bunch of options only having 16 different designs.

Since my love affair with the .44 Magnum began I learned to cast and have 5 molds (not counting the .433" round ball mold) each different, for my 5, .44 Magnums...

In order to make my 32-40s shoot the way they should, I think I got about 14 or so moulds in that caliber. Now I'm down to just 8 or 9 if I haven't forgotten one/some. ;) Other than that one, most other calibers (rifle or pistol) have usually been "covered" by just 4-5 moulds.

I lumped together the .356 & .358 for the 35's and the .311 & .309 diameters. Both of them I stoped counting @ 11 and I think there is more. I just am not going out to the shop this late.

What can I say I'm really a fan of DEEP PENETRATION! the problem with the 3000 gr 44mag is it takes up 5" of my 7 1/2" bore. And damn if it aint hard to get those to chamber in my Marlin 1894.

BTW I meant 300gr RNFPGC Saeco.
and as far as penetration in the SRH it is 26" of wet catalogs at 50' from the muzzle. Mv is about 1500fps. I'd give you a real number plus standard deviation but I left the "Red Solo Cup" full of recoverd boolits and the printout from my Ohler 35p on the top of the p/u bed side of my old '92 ford...

Did you know that Marine is a proper noun?

Why is it that spell check indicates boolits is misspelled?

30 caliber for me, I'm not sure exactly how many I have total, but it is a fair few, 6 Louverins, 2 311-291s, a SAECO 315 4 banger, 2 311-041s, 2 311-419s, probably 5 or 6 more if I go dig through the box.

Well, that's easy. It's the 45 ACP. I think I have 3 or 4 molds that haven't even got used - yet. Probably shouldn't have bought them. I rarely shoot round noses in my 45's. The SWC's work so well, and I have quite the selection, there's just no point in loadin the RN's.... Mike

For most calibers I have one or two molds. For .38 and .30 I have multiple molds. Heck, for .38 I probably have 15 molds. Granted, I only regularly use three of them but I have others just in case. I don't have multiples of any design except for a couple hollow points that are the same design as the solid.

It'll change some day. I would really like to cast/swage all my boolits.

I have about 15 or so 45ACP moulds, a dozen or so 30 cal moulds, and maybe 4 - 5 moulds each for the other calibers I load. I find that even with that many moulds, I tend to use only 3 or 4 different moulds for 45ACP for the most part, with the others being designs I've tried, but found better ones, but still want to hang onto because I occasionally like to load them for one reason or another. I also have some that are variations of a design, as an example I have 2 different H&G#68 style boolits, both from Mihec, one a bevel base, the other a plain base, and I use them interchangably as I find no difference in how they shoot.

But I lost count at 30 molds for the .32 handgun calibers (.311-.315) not including the odd heel based and undersized HB types.

Just another question I have no idea of what the answer is.

A better question is maybe "how many times have you purchased a mold and discovered you already have one to cast that bullet?"

Guilty but only because I knew I was replacing a 2 cv with a 4cv or getting a hp or because it was such a good design (311466)
I could not imagine what would happen if one got messed up. I have 3 sc 466's one with an altered nose.

It is always surprising to have a quick delve into what you have. I thought it was going to be .30, of which there were 19. But it turned out to be .45 with 23. Runners up were .38/.357 with 18 and .41 and .44 level pegging at 12. Too many??

Have 8 for the 30 cal
2 6 cavities for the 9mm one sub one super

1 6 cavity for the 45 acp

1 double 32 cal for the nagant

I need more I know that.
Still looking for a .22 mold for the ar15 that will feed.

1 single cavity HP for the 44 ( meaning to get another of some type)

You need to get a few more molds you don't have enough!!!

As to how many for what I have I don't really know went through a divorce a couple years ago and still find a mold once in a while in emptying a box for the next move this spring. I hate being a renter you are always looking at the next move as most of the time when the lease is up it is time to find a new place to rent.
Last time I did and inventory though seems I am heading towards 40-50 molds so there must be some for each caliber just don't know which or how many in each caliber. Maybe I should do an inventory by caliber next time so I have a better idea.

Just sorted the list by cal. and found (26) .45 cal molds including two .458(rifle) molds and three .457 round ball molds.

Also have 15 for .30 cal and 14 for .38/.357.

I should be a great handgun shot but I'm not.

Mine is 35 caliber. No clue what the count is. I would have more but luckily the same molds can be used for 9mm/38 Special/357. What's more troubling is that I have two 22 caliber molds. I don't own a centerfire in this caliber. And I've never owned a centerfire in that caliber. I passed up quite a few ARs today so the molds will still sit idle.

Why is it that spell check indicates boolits is misspelled?
Because you have not yet added it to your dictionary as a custom word.

I voted 1 since most calibers I only have 1 each yet, but I do have 2 for the 44 mag and 4 for the 458 win mag, this is not counting the round ball molds I have (have RB molds for the 30/44/45 cal plus others).

Oh and 4 molds for the 45 Black Powder caliber, now just need to get a BP gun in 45 besides the Philadelphia Derringer, LOL

45 cal seems to be my favorite, thought I had 6 then realized I had a 2-cav and a 6-cav of the same boolit. I cast round balls and 535 grainers with a few stops in between. With a C&B revolver, multiple 45 ACP and 45 Colt handguns, a 45 Colt, 45-70 and a 45-90 rifle I barely have all the bases covered. Oops, just realized I had 8. Can I change my vote? ;-)
I have, or will soon have, 2 ea in 30, 32 and 35 caliber. I've only been casting for a few years so there's definitely growth potential here. Maybe it's time to make a list.

I have 11 for the 44's and 10 for the .357 bores. It makes since though since there are so many .44 molds to chose from. Just think of all the Keith and Thompson style of molds that have been made over the years by Lyman, Ideal, Cramer, Lachmiller, NOE, Herters, Lee, RCBS, et al. Same thing for .357 molds, and I can use them in everything from .38 & .357 up to 357 Max, 35 Remington and 358JDJ. There are just so many of these common caliber molds lying around that it is easy to pick up one or two a year without really trying.
