being in indiana, i have embarked on working on using my .45-70 with .300" removed from the case lenth to make it an indiana legal cartridge. this is not a new concept, so i'm just working on the particulars for my rifle. [h & r buffalo classic] here's my query.... i have a lee 458-350, which is fairly straight-forward, but i also have a 452-255 rf and 452-300c rf. would either or both of these, with a paper patch, make a good choice for the .458 hoosier fired from a .45-70 chamber? my thought is that the 452-255 at 2200 to 2300 fps would perform like thor's hammer! oh. yeah. these would be cast from straight wheel weight metal. suggestions or experiences would be appreciated.

So the case gets shortened but not the overall length? As long as the boolit does not upset into the gap between case mouth and chamber end. It might need a stronger alloy or perhaps a powder with a slower pressure build up to clear the gap before upset pressure is reached. Maybe all is needed is a suitable boolit design. It's a single shot so length is no problem.

experience says that those .452 pistol boolits are addictive and jet fast...however...that chamber being long now from the shortened cases will make paper rings galore when fired. as 303 mentions tho...if you go with a strong alloy then perhaps the rings wont appear...im still bettin they will make their apearance tho.

the fun factor is unbelievable tho with those pistol boolits...they will go like a streak of light and no recoil to speak of while having a good strong punch im sure...try em n see

oh, yes.... the over all cartridge length may end up being shorter than original. .300" is a substantial amt. to shorten a ctg.
