Good morning
That is a nice looking 1881. Far nicer when you can have a good shooter to take out into the bushes and take that fine looking muley.

I was given an 1881 in .45-70 about a year ago. Externally it is in pretty decent condition but the bore is badly corroded and it has no buttstock.

Not sure if the barrel can be recut or if it will have to be replaced. I will slug it to get dimensions. It wouldn't bother me if the bore was somewhat oversize as long as a loaded round will chamber. I will also have to find a buttstock for it. Then it should be a shooter.

I will get to it one day.

Howdy Longbow
Have a 1876 45-60 that had the barrel religned and glad to have it done. Shoots like a new one.
My old 1873 32-20 is badly in need of a liner so it will get done next time up.
Have a 1881 45-70 but happily my barrel is shootable but if it wasn't I would get it lined with no heart ache. Gonna have to drill some of my 325 grainers and see how they shoot. Add that to my project list next time up.

Longbow,
Have the original barrel relined with a custom liner. Still 45-70. You will be surprised how good a lined barrel can shoot, stiffer then an unlined barrel. I prefer to get deep cut rifling. I think jobs done with acra glass are superior to liners held with lock-tite.

When I get some spare toy money I will look into lining the barrel. Good idea. Not sure who in Canada does it... certainly no-one local but it can be shipped and I am sure there is a gunsmith somewhere in the country that can do it. I know there are in the States.

Unfortunately it is difficult if not impossible now to ship from Canada to the States for work. More correctly, it is a problem to get firearms and parts shipped back from the States now.

I will certainly look into lining the barrel though.

Thanks.

I like the offset scope mounts on that one. Note how the rear buckhorn sight is not covered by the scope.

The 1881 was a top eject like the Winchesters so that was a necessity.

I bet that one is worth a bunch!

The barrel on your rifle can be relined.
There are two sizes of the 1881, large size fit the 45-70 rim size and was made in several calibers. Smaller frame was in the 38-55 class.
Most common problem is the cartridge retainer spring on the carrier. I have made more than a few over the years.
