I want to choose powder for the following calibers for both cast boolits and j-words.

308 Win
30-06
7.62x54r
7.62x39

Of course I would ask if there is any one powder that would excel at this, and I spent some time googling that last night. I have read in numerous places that Varget is good for j-words and IMR-4227 for the cast loads. So, I turn to you all for advice.

4895 will do nicely for both cast (medium and heavy for caliber) bullets and jacketed bullets.

What Larry said. It may not be the single-best fuel for each caliber, but it will give good service and accurate performance in all of them. The 4895s are to rifle calibers what Unique is to shotgun and handgun venues.

i'll be a little more specific and go with IMR-4895.
you could get some 2400 for the cast part if you really wanted to.

H335 should also be fine and meters very well. I use it in 30-30, 308, 7.62x39, should work in 7.62x54r

W748, RL15, IMR4064 all will also give good service in these cartridges.
Nothing particularly wrong with 4895, either. None will give absolute maximum performance
in all cartidges, but not far off.

Like the others, my first thought was 4895, but Varget is in the same burn range as 4895 and the other powders being listed.

It depends on what velocities you are looking at shooting and even the weight of cast boolit. As an example if you are wanting to push out a 200 grain boolit @ 2000-2200 fps in the 30-06 then 4227 or 2400 isn't the best medicine. Generally speaking, if you are after the higher velocities in your chosen rifles then the slower powders will work better i.e. 4895, 4064, Varget, Reloader 15 among others etc. If you are after slower velocities 4759 or Accurate Arms 5744 are nice powders that are bulky and fill the cases well. Even 4198 is a good one for bit more velocity than 4759 or 5744. Give us a bit more into and we will be able to help you out more.

Hodgen has reduced loads using 4895 on their site now. If anyone didnt know.
I just bought my very first jug of Varget the other day.
I love 5744 for my cast shooting in rifles
