Would anyone know if a barrel from a Savage model 12 in 6.5x284 will fit an old model 110 action.
I dont know which barrels went to the larger shank. Thanks!

Measure the shank. 1.055 for a small shank. 1.12 for a large shank. It should be a small shank if it is a factory barrel

I think the magnum calibers and the target actions are the large shank. I had a 6.5-284 factory barrel and IIRC it was small shank and I think would fit.

Dan if you do NOT have the tools to swap out Savage bbls let me know as I have swapped several and all of the tools are just sitting here.

I will be right over to lend a hand

Thanks Bill! I have one of the old type so should be good. I cant figure how to work on the new ones without grooves.

Spanner wrench. Easy to make. Find a pin that fits the hole. Now take a piece of flat steel that has the same radius as the Nut. Weld the pin onto the end of one side. It will look like a big C when done. Add a handle and you have a new tool.

I just put together a 300 H&H with a McGowen pre-fit barrel. Sure saves on outside expenses. going to do a 6.5-06 next.

When I got it all headspaced, the caliber marking on the sides were exactly where they should be. Funny how they can do that.

Some of the actions direct from the factory were tightened by GODZILLAS trainer. I had one I could not budge. Took it to a friend that built VERY expensive rifles. Even he had a hard time breaking it loose. The next ones came loose the way they should. Many reasons have been given for the tight ones but it does happen.[smilie=b:

You should be good. The large shanks were used on the short mags and ultra mags. That barrel should be a small shank. I am not sure of the target actions.

All 3 screw target actions are large shank. Or the LRPT actions are also large shank.

I dont know what action this came from. I am trying to buy this barrel. The seller said the shank measured 1 1/4" as best he could measure it. So that would make it closer to a large than a small. The barrel is made by Savage is 30" heavy chambered for the 6.5x284.
If it is large I think I can just rethread it to small agree?

It is a large shank. Here is the gun it came off of. http://www.savagearms.com/firearms/model/12FCLASS

Be aware, these are barrel burners. They only last around 1500 rds. Being it is a large shank bull barrel. I would cut off the chamber end and rethread and chamber it. IF, you can get it cheap!

Learn something new everyday. I will have to remember the target actions are large shanks.

I dont understand why a 6.5x284 would be a barrel burner. I have a 25x284 and a 6mmx284 and loading to sain pressures I dont see much difference from any other cartridge of like bore capacity. Not saying case capacity but bore capacity. The 6.5 or 264 cal should be fairly well adjusted to the volume of the 284 case at slightly less than the 30/06 case. Much more so than say a 25/06 and I am a big fan of the 25/06.
Even so I would heed your advice and give it a good look over. Since I would have to rethread anyway it would be no big deal to shorten a wee bit.

While I have not handled a large shank Savage barrel, I have fooled with a lot of small shanks.

My understanding is that large shank barrels (factory ones anyway) have a step down from the threads to the barrel as you move forward. All my small shanks, the threads run right out level with the outside of the barrel.

Somebody correct me if I am wrong.

And, yes target actioned and newer short mag barrels are large shank.
