Bought 2500 new Winchester 45-70 cases for use in Gatling Gun. Finished trimiming them to a uniform lenght to insure a uniform crimp. Started loading them and after the first two cases showed the primers protruding above the base of the case, checked the primer seater (OK), tried Win., Fed., and CCI primers and all protruded. Checked the depth of the primer pocket and found them to be shallow 0.126" to 0.127". Should be 0.130', bought a primer pocket uniformer from Sinclair International and tried that. Got the 0.130' depth OK, but what a pain in the butt to do. Took several hours to do 250 cases.
Does anyone have contact information for Winchester, Olin in East Alton, IL so I can contact them on this problem? Or what would you do? Jon

There are several people here who use pistol primers in blackpowder loads that would welcome minimum depth primer pockets like you have. PM about same if you would.

Just got off the phone talking to Winchester. They are sending a pick-up order for a sample of the cases to exam them. Will keep you posted. Jon

Glad that you got in touch with the proper people, I would think they would have an interest in making sure primer pockets were in spec and would not case issues.

Rookie trapdoor question follows, would high primers make their use in a trapdoor dangerous? Mine is a 50-70 and I am using starline brass so this doesn't apply to me,,just curious.

I've had this same problem with Win. .45-70 brass in the past and did the same thing you have done. I got a primer pocket reamer and now check each new batch with it. I've gotten Win. involved in other brass issues in the past but figured by giving the primer pockets a going over it'd just be more advantageous and easier than waiting for them to do something for me. It's worked out. Newer lots of brass have been fine but I have made it SOP to just always check them now.

As stated by 45 2.1, there is a definite interest in shallow pocketed brass.
If you decide to make yours available...and 45 2.1 doesn't take it all...Yance (in this thread http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showpost.php?p=193793&postcount=22 ) might like a chance at some.

Just got off the phone with Winchester, they say it will be up to 4 weeks before they can get to the cases. Wheels of progress grind exceedingly slow..

I had a problem with WW .375 brass for my revolver long ago. Every rim was a different thickness and many would not rotate past the recoil plate. I rarely buy their brass unless they are the only ones to make a caliber I need. Not nice to have different headspace for every case!
