Kill more before I wreck my truck on another....
I was worried the pic was going to show the suppressor on the gun with the deer
Would be nice if we could sbr and/suppressor hunt here.

Naw. I wish, but maybe the new legislature can change that.

I hunt with the subsonics because I am stubborn.

Having people tell me time and again that you need to be hunting with a 300 super duper magnum going mach 4 lighting your hair on fire dislocating your shoulder turning at least 1/4 of the deer into a fine rest mist being heard 2 counties over to shoot a deer at 50yds.

I just like to be contrary.

My previous post is why I have been documenting these. since where I hunt gives me less than 100yd shot , I have not seen the need in using other calibers, especially considering that I have not shot a deer at any distance beyond 50 yds.

I own others and am definitely not against them. I almost always recommend a .308 Winchester when people ask, for a all around cartridge.

My only complaint with hunting with cast bullets is the smoke. After I fired and returned the gun to target I did not see the buck. because of the smoke haze. I thought I was going to have to track a little bit, which is no problem for me, but i get lazy. Anyway I got out of the blind and walked over as I got close I realized what I thought was a stick was his antlers.

I am using an old alox lube that i found at an old gunshop in backwoods virginia several years back. Lubed and sized with a star sizer.

It really is not that bad. The lla smokes more but i mainly use it on pistol boolits

Lar's Carnuba Red is inexpensive and very little smoke. Most of the time so little smoke I don't notice it.
I shot a deer quite a few years ago with the 300 Whisper but super sonic with the 125gr Nosler BT. similar entrance hole but the exit was silver dollar sized.
I've shot jack rabbits with the Lyman 314299 just over 200 grs. Hard to tell what wasn't destroyed.
As long as the vitals are hit and a hole is put in them the animal is usually collected.
Glad you got a deer and used the gun and load you wanted.

Slightly off topic but since we cant sbr/suppressor hunt here, I enjoy using my thompson carbine with stiffer springs with 45 super brass and 200 swc. Works well.

But I doubt we will see suppressor s anytime soon.

It’s odd and amazing how a big slow 30 caliber boolit quickly dispatches deer. Friend down in KY took a RCBS 30-180-FN I sent him. Two stepped a deer using a 7.62x39 custom bolt gun with a sub sonic load. That bullet weighs in at 202 grains cast soft from a BHN #9 alloy. Expanded a bit to leave a IIRC golf ball sized exit hole on a double lung shot. Deer flinched then took one leap and piled up.

Nice I have taken a deer with my 300 BO using the 247gr boolit cast with range lead which is a little softer then WWs loaded with max load of reloader so my action will cycle. Damage to deer was not what I was thinking it would be boolit was in and out with little damage. But deer dropped in its tracks. I see your not that far from me I am in the Goldsboro area about a hour drive from F B my son was stationed there for awhile.

How do you like the A1680 I have not tried that in mine as of yet. Also are you loading any super sonic loads ? I was thinking of some 150s jackets.

gds

nice one RP.

When you say reloader are you refering to Reloader 7?

A1680 is dirty and there are concerns about full burn, in subsonic loadings, but it has worked very well for me. The 10.1gr has almost come to be my go to charge. It has worked with jacketed bullets from 178 -220gr and cast boolits from 200 to the 247gr, and function the rifle or in this case pistol.

I use the 1680 for some supersonic loadings as well. I was using Alliant 2400 for some super sonic loadings in my carbine length gas system, but when I tried them in the pistol length gas systems it was way to hot. I have not had time to configure some new loads for the 147-150g jacketed, or some of my lighter grain cast boolits 130-160gr

Yes sir. it is amazing. What seems to be missed by a lot of people IMHO is that shot placement trumps everything. If you put it in the boiler room it will kill the deer. They may run off, but they will expire if you hit them where they need to be hit.

I saw some threads a few years back on ARFCOM with guys using .223 to harvest deer and posting pictures of the damage. And after much bologna I read about what was needed to harvest a deer and starting to use my 300blk, I started documenting all my deer kills. It amazes me how some of the internal damage is so much alike between projectiles. Not always and there are always things that can be different, but the similarities I find interesting.

Yes gds I am using reloader 7 at the top end of the load data which cycles well and no signs of trouble. I have to get more time tinkering with loads. I have tried some few jacketed bullets with super sonic loads just to see the noise level difference. I have not tried much else since I got it going. But for those who are looking a fun gun I have to say this may be for you. Reasons for me to get one were 1 lots of brass cheap 2 I get to form brass which is just kool 3 the only thing that is different from a 5.56 is the barrel. After getting it I have found shooting it with sub sonic loads I do not need ear protection.

I've found if you put a hole in BOTH lungs it doesn't much matter what you put it there with.
A hole in one lung needs to be bigger but doesn't have to be.

When I was a young man and still shooting factory ammo I shot a doe on the point of the shoulder with a 308 win 150 gr win power point in my savage 99. There was no blood but even then I was a fair tracker and I knew I didn't miss. After about 60 yds or so I started getting blood. By the time I found the deer at about 100 yds I had a pretty good blood trail. I've always been a bullet tracker so I checked the wound out real good. The bullet had blew up on the shoulder blade and the softball sized hole was covered in tiny flecks of copper. When field dressed I found a slit 1/2" long between two ribs. A piece of jacket had come thru and entered a lung. The blood I was tracking was blowing out her nose. The wound was about what you would get if you stuck a pocket knife in a lung, yet she only went 100 yds and was dead when I got there. I've always been amazed at how fragile the thread of life can be.
I've also been amazed at how strong it can be.

Oh as far as bullet placement weight and speed it is not what is seems. We know heavy bullets go deeper for the most part faster bullets exploding for the most part just to keep it simple. I have shot deer double lung which left very heavy blood trails even some rib bone in one pile of blood. I thought this is a great time to teach my son how to track a deer. So we start where I shot then went to where the deer stood. Followed by which way the deer ran finding sign and marking it. I was taking my time showing him every thing to do just to wind up on my hands and knees finding small drops of blood until the trail was lost. The deer was shot in the am hours and that night was hit my a car a buddy of mine saw the deer stumble out of the woods and get hit. He was checking on the driver then looked the deer over told me you could see dried blood all over the deer and a hell of a exit wound. Then on the other hand the same rifle has dropped deer in their track with hits in the same areas. I always look at the effects on the deer from various calibers some I find the bullet in others have massive damage then some I wonder why the deer died so fast. There is no cut and dry answer so to speak. I have seen a fast exploding bullet tears up a lot of meat but tend not to go deep. The same weight bullet that is more of a core lock tends to pass threw expanding as it goes. I even shot a deer with a BP using a pure lead 45 270gr now that did some massive damage. So there are so many ways of killing a deer with so many different bullets I think its more of the shooters choice. I am just glad we have so many to pick from and play with. Sorry for rambling on:veryconfu

Well shot a doe with my 300 using a 247 pushed with reloader 7. Looks the same as the last deer I shot hole in hole out not a lot of damage. The boolit stuck ribs on both sides.

Well not much to see as far as damage deer ran about 20 yards and bedded down. It was more like a bow shot deer then a rifle shot deer. That being said I have changed to 168gr BT boattails. Pushed by 16.5 grs of H 110. I shot these and they group well and not sure if the speed is enough to make them work like they should.

I run 150 gr Speer SPBT's at 1950 ish and get very good exspansion out too 200 yards. Haven't shot a deer with them yet but I have no doupt they will plant one. I run cast 150gr at the same speed. Also have a nice inbetween load with the Lee 170 gr with 12 gr IMR4227 at about 1380 fps thats very accurate.

RP I would say that looks like a successful kill to me. is the 168gr a jacketed bullet or a cast?

Also I got my chrony back from repair and ran my load over it. I was averaging 850 fps with this load. I have bumped up the charge to 11gr which gives me 1020 fps

Nice deer. I have my AR-15 .300 BLK up and running (with NOE 247) and hope to use it for hunting at some point. Probably not here in Alaska though.

I worked on my Dad's 300 BLK SBR supressed the other day. Using small magnum rifle primers, 5.5 grains red dot and the 247 grain NOE cast of pure +2% they ran 1020 fps, cycled the action, fed well, and grouped just under 2 inches at 100 yards. They were a little dirty and I need to work on that, but it would work good nuff if needed. Actually had a lot of recoil for a supressed load.
Now I just gotta go "Here, piggy piggy piggy!"

what is your set up?

Generic lower with A2 buttstock. Carbine recoil spring and buffer in a rifle length tube. Semi auto carrier. Cheap ol plastic 20 round mag (soon to be replaced). Running a custom built 11 inch barrel with pistol length gas tube. This is all Form 1 ATF legal with screw on Form 1 supressor.
