I know this is a twist for a patched RB but is there any chance a conical would stabilize maybe something shorter like the Lee real bullet. Found one real cheap local in a flintlock but wanted not to be limited to RB only if possible .

Well you never know for sure until you try it in that particular gun

i agree with fishhawk. My .50 1-70 shoots short conic fairly well and my 1-32 shoots RB well.Bullet/patch fit and rifling depth is probably more important.

Depends on what you want to do and how accurate you need or have to be. I shot the Lee short 200gr REAL in my CVA with a 1/66 and it did ok. Good enough for minute of deer at 75y or maybe to 100. I think it was on the brink of stability because most would shoot good but I'd have a flier like one out of every 4. It wasn't a real bad flier but it blew the bell curve on accuracy. Still good enough for deer. Might have done better with a over powder wad but I never tried it and maybe your's will do better.

Hornady makes one called the Pennsylvania Conical. I used them in my Austin and Halleck .50 caliber hawken to take 3 deer. They're hollow base , knurled with some kind of greasy lube in the knurling. They didn't shoot too bad, but I prefered patch and round ball. I think the twist was 1 in 60.
