First post so I hope this is in the right forum area . Am putting together loads for a S&W Model 58 . I do not as yet cast ( I know heresy ) myself . I've got 1k of Missouri Bullets 215 LSWC Trooper Magma design mold . 18 BHN & sized .411 , fits gun good . I probably need a softer bullet as my intent was a load between 1000 to 1100 fps . Doing the math ( 18 BHN X 1440 = 25,960 ( psi or cup ? ) min press to obturate . Well I don't have any load software so I'm by guess . Powders I plan on using initally are Unique ( 7.5 to 9grs ), Universal ( 7.0 to 8.5 grs ), SR 7625 ( 7.5 to 9.0 grs ) , 2400( 14.5 to 17grs ) & H4227 ( 16.5 to 18grs ) . Other powders I'm considering are VVN 340 & 350 , SR 4756 & maybe RS Enforcer . Though 18 bhn alloy will hold up to full pressure load that is not what I'm looking for . I'm also concerned about the lube & since bullet is a good fit @ .411 sized . I'm wondering if LLA or White Label LA with JPW & tumble / dip lubing with these will help . PITA I know but nobody likes scrubbing lead out a gun . See how this goes & I'm pretty sure a softer alloy sized .411 is what I wind up with . BTW I've used Lyman 410610 data for load suggestions as it too has a long shank seated into the case & I'm figuring pressures should be close . Any help or suggestions gratefully accepted . Thanks ,
Andy

I use a softer alloy and size to .412 for my Ruger Blackhawk's. The bullet is harder than you need. I would try the UNIQUE load first. Your gun will tell you if the bullet does not fit by leaving a few lead deposits. only way to know is try, and it might work fine. I'm sure others will add their info.

anything bigger than 411 won't chamber in either my black hawk or in my hunter model.
8.5 grs of the unique or universal is a good load.
as is 16 grs of the 2400.

I size my MP 223 gr. keith bullet to .412, load in Starline brass using WLP primers. Swapping around with Unique, HP-38, H110, Bullseye, Power Pistol, 2400, and MP-300. My most impressive loads in accuracy and power came from Mp-300 first then 2400. Most impressive in accuracy only was HP-38. I shoot BHN 14 bullets all the way to the top and, now that I have the barrel constriction out, it never leads. Shooting these out of a Lew Horton S&W stainless with a 7" barrel and removeable compensator. I love the 41 and hope to get a bisley in it as well as a model 92 lever.

Best i've found in all my 41's is 4227 and 2400. But I'm shooting jacketed thru it, as I use this for a deer load.

Suggest, with that bullet, you start off with your 7.5 - 9 gr Unique load; 8.5 gr, as previously mentioned, has always been a good load for 210 - 215 gr commercial cast for me in several .41s including a couple M58s. The BHN at 18 is fairly hrd and typical for most commercial cast. You may get leading depending on what lube is on the bullet. When that happens I find a TL in LLA many times helps or I wash off the lube used and relube.

When I was shooting IHMSA regularly, 4227 (either IMR or Hodgden) was my 'go-to' for upper-end loads for heavy boolits (238 gr. NEIs) in the .41 Mag. and for 'mid-range' with 180 or 210 grainers, both Unique and AA #5 worked quite well.

+1 on what Larry said about lubes. Recently, I was given a couple cartons of commercial 'hard-cast' .44 SWCs with a hard parafin-based lube. Loaded up a few and was seeing signs of leading after just a dozen shots. Tumble-lubed a handful with 45/45/10...which is what I use on all my own cast .44s...and no apparent leading from next test loads.
