I am in a pickle. I need to deprime some 223 brass without sizing the case. Can I use the 223 shell holder on my press with a different decamping die such as 308 or 30-06? I know this isn't the normal way of doing things but I have an opportunity to shoot this weekend but my universal decapping die won't be in in time.

I also have a 300 weatherby mag dies and 22-250.

I know this is stupid. I'm in a pickle. Just take it for what it's worth....

308 and 30-06 are Dillon
22-250 are lee
300 weatherby are RCBS.

Thanks!!

Don't see why it wouldn't work. You can always use a Wilson decapping set as well - nothing simpler than their hammer and punch with a hollow base!

The .22-250 will work if the expander ball isn't too big, but it shouldn't be especially on fired brass. The others have the much-too-large expander ball to contend with and I'm not sure it can be removed and still retain the decapping pin, although the Dillon dies might work that way.

If you have a pistol die set of any kind remove the decapper assembly and use it like a punch/base with your shellholder and a brass or soft-faced hammer.

I have a set of redding competition dies coming in the mail Monday. I have brass that had been form fired in my new 700, chambered in 223. I will have access to another set of dies this Friday to reload this brass so I can shoot this weekend. I want to have the brass I have cleaned, deprimed, and trimmed prior to reloading it this Friday. I'm just in a bind.

Universal de capping dies are the bomb, I deprime everything and then wash the brass. I was at a friend's who didn't have one yet so we used a rod from a pistol die and the die body of a larger case (30-30 I think) and de primed a 5 gallon bucket of .223 brass. I use a Lee Reloader press just for depriming, well I used to. Now I use that press for depriming and punching gas checks with my CheckMaker dies.

the 22-250 will punch the primers with no problems.
but i don't think it will resize the necks.

Do you have a Lee Loader kit for .223? (of course you do - everyone needs a kit for every common calibre they reload right!?!)

This will slightly open the case mouth/neck but will not size the shoulder or body.

Living in a town of about 50,000 people, giver take, it can be difficult to say the least to find reloading supplies. I ended up using the 22-250 die and it worked like a charm, without resisizing of any kind, exactly my goal. I got all my brass decapped and cleaned in SS media ready to reload. Thanks to all that helped.

Get one of the RCBS lube dies. It'll dprime but wont resize.
I use mine exclusively on my LNL loading 223's up

I wish I had read this earlier. I would have said you could have sent it to me. I would have had my son deprime it with my universal lyman decapper and send it back. He loves to do that or I would offer to let you borrow the die.
