View Full Version : Casting while it rains

My casting bench is on a covered porch. It was raining to day and I remembered an old thread where some said that casting while it was raining resulted in better casts. I placed my NOE 323471 three cavity mold on top of my Lee bottom pour pot while the lead was heating and waited. After the lead was melted and would pour through the bottom spout I began. The sprue on the first cast took more than 30 seconds to cool and the boolits were frosted and broke when dropped on a towel (obviously the mold was too hot). After letting the mold cool just a bit I tried again. Cast after cast of beautiful boolits rained from the mold until l needed to add more lead to the pot. I added more lead and as soon as it would flow from the bottom spout again I continued to cast. More of the same. There seems to be some truth to that old wives tail about casting while raining.

Has anyone else this experience?

Out here in Western WA, it rains all the time, so casting when it's not raining isn't something I normally do. and I get lots chances to cast all year long. Lots of beautiful bullets, so for me, I suppose it really IS true (ha-ha)!! I cast up some .452 290 gr. beauties this morning and it was POURIN" outside. Turned out mostly perfect with few rejects....

So, is it the humidity, the low air pressure, or both?

I`ve noticed better fill out when the humidity is up using isotope alloy.

What is this rain of which you speak? Here in the Texas panhandle it is only a passing memorie.

I guess you would have to say that we cast in the falling dirt here in the panhandle. LOL

Your statement kind of reminded me of Iraq. Ask anyone who has been there when it did try to rain. Brown rain, we called them mud drops.

I love casting when it is raining.
Everything seems to go smoother.

I don't know why.

I cannot see the rain being a factor. How the hell does the mold/melt know it is raining?

Relative humidity is the likely factor or a placebo effect. If it is RH, then places like FL should be good casting sites. I recall Houston being really bad too. Casting in Arizona must be very challenging.

Not having a lot if rain here in AZ I wouldn't know good casting from bad. It's all the same to me. If I waited till it rained to cast I may never get the chance.

Lizard,

Just get yourself a swamp cooler and you will not only cast superb bullets but do it with added comfort!! LOL

We got 2.75 inches here... this year! Don't recall ever casting in the rain. Now I have cast a lot when it's 110-115 degrees and my underarms and back were raining :)

It probably doesn't.

But I do.

If you have ever MEASURED the humidity (as for controlling manufacturing processes) you will note that the humidity will be high right up to the point when it starts to rain - then it DROPS like a rock. The rain coming down cleans it right out of the air.

It is WEIRD to see the puddles on the ground and at the same time the lowest humidity you've seen!

What? No dew on the ground in the desert states? ... felix

I had to look up "dew" in the dictionary. Nope. Have nothing of the sort 😏

Casting while its raining is psychological. You are there, doing something productive thinking to yourself "I can't shoot today, but I'm making boolits baby!"

It doesn't rain here much. We get about 10 inches a year. It WAS nice and cool without being cold. It was also nice to listen to the soft patter of the rain while casting.

I always get the best results left handed.

SciFiJim, I generally do my casting on the Northern CA coast near the Oregon border as that's where my casting gear is located. Up there, the rain is measured in feet, not inches. I've seen ten inches in one storm more than once. No rain, no redwood trees.

+1 Musicman but then I have never tryed casting right handed

Man! You guys are good! I've always had to use both hands.

Seriously though, my road is dirt, 44% grade in places. Warm, dry, casting on rainy days has been a goal of mine.

People cast when it isn't raining? When isn't it raining? Dennis

All of you miss the real reason! [smilie=s:
When it is raining you relax because you don't want to go out and do other work. It is just a relief from chores and that makes casting go real good.

Condensing atmosphere while casting is a guaranteed real deal.
