Joe,
I use 45gns of H4895 behind the RCBS 250GC in my .375H&H. Using a standard Remington primer and kanga lube I get 1800fps and 1.5 MOA accuracy.

This boolit is one I use in my son's .375Win Marlin and has a flat nose but seems to work OK in the H&H.

Great practice load.

I use 34-38 grains of XMP 5744 with a CCI 250 primer. 100 yard groups go as small as 0.50 inches (35 grs). Seems to work well with most bullets. I've also been trying AA3100 for some fast loads. Results are promising with groups hovering around an inch at 2,500 fps.

I too have a # 1 in the same cal. It has never had a lead slug down the tube, but it's on the list to rectify that. Let us know how you make out.

Couple earlier posts on other threads for the 375 H&H concerning my loads with 375449.

I use lyman 377449GC bullet in my M70 375 H&H. While I've not hunted Africa I have killed a couple elk with this bullet out of the 375 H&H. I'll suggest 2 loads using this bullet. I use both W-W and R-P cases with WLR primers.

First is 36 gr of AA5744. This runs at 1850 fps out of my M70. The last test I ran with this load was 10 shots at 100 yards over the Oehler M35P. Average velocity was 1852 fps, ES was 32 fps and SD was 9 fps. The 10 shot group was right at 2" which isn't bad for a 2.5X scope.

Second load and the one I most often use (used on the elk) was the 377449GC cast of magnum lead shot and water quenched from the mould. I use 49 gr of IMR4895 with a 1 gr tuft of dacron as a filler over the powder. Velocity is 2175 fps and 5 shots go into 1.5" with regularity. I thoroughly intend to use this load on plains game when I go to Africa.

There are two fine articles in the NRA Cast Bullets Supplement No. 1 by C.E. Harris (Cast bullets In Africa) and George Martin (In the Field) that are about 375 H&H cast bullet loads developed and used in Africa. Was those articles that got me loading cast for the 375 H&H and they are worth reading. Good luck hunting and let me know if I can help further with the load development.

I've found the Lyman 375499 to meet all my needs save on for my M70 .375 H&H. A good practice load is 36 gr AA5744 for 1850 fps. For a hunting load the same bullet over 50 gr of milsurp 4895 with a dacron filler runs right at 2200 fps. The one other load I use is a .375 RB, usually Hornady, lightly lubed with LLA over 4 gr of Bullseye for 890 fps - an excellent rabbit/grouse/ptarmigan load.

Sunday we had a cast bullet at Wind Hill for the Cast Bullet Assc. group. I use the Ruger #1 and had 100 rds, that came with the rifle loaded in 2004, 20 Gr. H4227, Ly. 375 449, 20-1 alloy, 100 yds. about 1 in. but then get a flyer to make it 2- 3 in. group. Same thing at 200 yds. but we had wind and rain. Some groups were 4 in. at 200yds. The day before the match I floated the hanger and the forearm, It opened up to 6 in. at 100 Yds. I shimed it back up for the match, I want to try some heavery loads in it next. I found the 375449 mold and a 375167 mold in my collection, Going to cast some up out of foundry cast lead and make them scream. Yous got a fast screamer load. Thanks- Smokemjoe

BABore -

Any idea what your 35 gr. 5744 load is running pressure wise?

I've been thinking about buying an Encore in .375 H&H. How long is the throat on your barrel? If you make a chamber impression, I'd like to see a picture posted here.

I use the NEI .375-280gc. 58 gr. of VV N140 gives me 2100 fps. 17 gr. Green Dot with mag primer gives 1700 fps and .6 moa accuracy.:-D
