I believe it keeps track of all the new posts since your last visit, not necessarily all the new posts that you haven’t read.

Wouldn't be surprised, I know I am barely skimming on the today section, and can barely keep up. We are setting records of people on the board since the updates. 800 online at the time, over 900 a few days ago.
