My son recently bought a #1 in 458 Win Mag. He's several hundred miles from me so I can't do a chamber/throat cast. He can slug it for me for reference. Does anyone have any recommendations for a suitable gas check mould in the 450-550 grain drop weight range that is likely to work well in the rifle?

Thanks guys.

I used to have one and the best bullet in it was the rcbs 500 round flat gas check. I use to crimp in the top grease grove and out of 5050 ww/lyno i pushed them as fast as 2000 fps. They would shoot just over an inch at 100 yards for the first 3 shot group then the beating i took would open up the groups.

Lloyd: Thank you. Had a look at the RCBS web page and it appears to still be available. Like a longer 405FNGC bullet and may be just the ticket for the magnum.
Will try and track one down.

just keep in mind that there really long throated guns and you will need to seat that bullet out far to get the best accuacy. Like i said i crimped in the first grease grove and still didnt reach the end of the chamber. Nice thing with seating them out too is you get more case capacity and therefore less pressure. Using that bullet cast out of 5050 ww/lyno and shot at 1800fps i wouldnt be afraid to tackle any game animal on the planet.

Sight unseen?

I would go with an LBT design and ask for .461. Good generic designs that will throw the diameter. And easy to mold bullets of that size / weight with for novices.

Bass: Son isn't set up for casting so that will fall to me for keping him supplied. Thus the search for gents who have used that rifle in that chambering for their recommendations as it will be a few months before he and I get together to hunt out of Fort St. John where he works and lives..
Expanded my search a bit to check out NEI and they make a 460-505GC that looks pretty nice and seems to have been made specifically for the magnum. Kind of like a fat 358009 and I do love that one. Also, I'm very fond of NEI moulds and delivery direct from them is usually much faster than I can get RCBS through dealer channels up here. The decision on which to buy will be his.

I think he still has a good supply of RCBS405FNGC that I sent him for his 45/70 so those will occupy him until we/he settles on a mould more specific to the cartridge.

. . . he's absolutely right.

The RCBS 500gr RNFPGC is by far the most accurate bullet I have tried . . . with any powder (casts at 525gr with WW metal).

I've tried over 50 different cast bullet loads in that gun (Ruger #1 Tropical) and think I've figured out what works and what doesn't.

You cannot go wrong with the RCBS bullet.

Bob has hit it on the head. Thats a great bullet. As is the 405 version. They both work great in the marlin 4570s too!

Bob, Lloyd: Hard to beat those kinds of recommendations. Thanks again all.

Bass: Sight unseen (qoute)? Yep, just like the moulds I bought in calibres I don't own, just in case the right rifle came my way. Sometimes they have too!

I have a # 1 in 458 Lott. I shoot the Lyman 475 grain RNGC. at 1950 It is a very accurate load at 50 yds. (under 1.5") the mold is #2640671 sized to .459, using #2 lyman

I have two Ballisti-cast molds for the 458WM. They are #1451 & #1452. Bought them for a guide gun and specified sizing to .460. They required throating to chamber which I did but swithed to another design. They are a FNGC design that is .461" as cast all the way to the ogive. They don't feed in my Win Mod 70. They do feed in the levers but make closeing the lever difficult. Was hoping eventually some one could them.

I imagine they would work in a very long throated single shot chamber well.

How about $50/ea.
