View Full Version : I Will Be Using My Second Chioce Load On Monday For Deer

After casting a bunch of RCBS 45-270-SAA boolits and sizing at .452 and .451 and trying various powders I couldn't get a good enough group at 50 yards to hunt deer with any confidence at all. I feel to make this boolit work in my Ruger Bisley .45 Colt there will need to be some work done on my revolver. At .451 I still have to use a little force to push the boolits through the throats, and I'm sure that big front diving band is not compatible with the factory cut forcing cone. This winter I will be having the chambers reamed to .4525" and the forcing cone cut to 11 degrees and a spring kit added, and some trigger work done. In the mean time I will be using the Lee .255 grain RNFP atop 9.1 grains of Unique. I am consistantly within 6" at 50 yards shooting from various field positions with gloved hands. I believe that rounded ogive is way more forgiving of the forcing cone than the square driving band of the RCBS boolit. So far I'm really confident with this load and that is half the battle when entering the woods.

I think that should work out just fine. Good luck with your quest. Let us know how the improvements go.

Confidence in the load/gun combination makes a guy a much better shooter.

Wise choice in going with what works rather Han what you wanted to work. Not everyone would make that decision.

Just finished reamin' the chamber on my Blackhawk to .4525, so now all those heavy boolits chamber beautifully! That 270 SAA will work nicely when you get 'er done. That's a fact.
I've considered a new spring kit for mine. Doin' the Brownells? or Wolf? I am looking for advice on that rather than the "poor man's trigger job" I've done on every BH I have owned.....

Otherwise, good luck on the hunt. Still ain't nothin' wrong with your "second choice".

that 255 rnfp will do the job just fine.

I've taken several deer and 1 coyote with the lee 452-255RF with 8.8 gr unique for 1000 fps. This is the most accurate boolit or bullet I've shot out of my gun. I went to the Lyman 452-424 HP because I wasn't impressed with the wound channel left by the lee boolit. The Lyman is not as accurate in my gun but is good enough and the one deer and one coyote had a lot bigger wound channels.

All that being said I wouldn't hesitate to hunt deer with the lee boolit. If you get a hole in both lungs the blood trail may be scimpy but it won't be very long.

Some of the deer I've shot didn't run off, they just made a few jumps then stopped and looked around. I don't think I've ever had one go more than 50 yds but they could have if they had been aware of my presence.

Your absolutely correct that you must have confidence in your load.
Good luck

PS Paul, I will be using the Wolff Kit. I've already talked to my local gunsmith about tuning the trigger, even with the poor man's trigger job it is still horrible, when trying to squeeze off a heavy recoiling round on a sand bag, and focusing on the front sight that trigger feels like I'm pulling it forever before it breaks. I got lucky with my SBH, I did the poor mans trigger job on it and it broke at 2.5 pounds with no creep whatsoever, it is the one pictured in my avatar.

I know exactly what you mean. I took a 41 mag blackhawk that had a trigger I just hated and with some red-neck ingenuity made it into the finest shooter I own. What I did was use a set of .003 copper washers as shims, counter bore or recess the pin holes with a 30 degree tool for grease to set in. Then I used a needle punch to assemble everything with pleanty of lithium grease. It took me all day just to recess the pin holes and align the parts, but it was worth it. I love that trigger, but there is no way in heck I will take it apart agian.

I visited your profile to see if I could make the picture/avatar larger, but no luck. Thanks for the Wolff springs tip. I figure since I have already reamed the chambers, I might as well just go ahead and make it near perfect. Again, GOOD LUCK on the hunt and I will be checking back to see how you did.

Here in MO. muzzle loader season has been changed to alternative methods. You can use a center fire handgun. Looking forward to it!

Wolfer, I think I could break with tradition in that instance. :)
