Hi All

I have a lee 452-230tc mold, the only way i can get the bullet from this mold to seat in my cz97b or kriss super v barrels is to set coal at 1.14 (i have just made dummy rounds)

When i size the brass it drops in to the barrels fine no issues, so its not the brass.

Bullets are sized to .452

just seems 1.14 is way to short

Wondering if i made a mistake buying this mold?

Like you have done, I used my barrel for the barrel gague, I will go check the OAL of those rounds, but it is what it is; its gotta fit. I also sized that boolit in a .452 push through sizer. Be right back......

..... it is 1.19" on my rounds with that boolit. Looks like you are even shorter and I am close to taper crimping on the edge of straight section of the boolit. Are you using a taper crimp?

Hi

I am using taper crimp to .471

My taper crimp may be just a shade less tight. I've shot quite a lot of these over the past few weeks and no indication of excess pressure and they cycle reliably.

Just tried backing off the taper a little and reducing the bell of case mouth and can get 1.165 to chamber but nothing longer. I guess i now need to reduce the powder a little.

What powder are you using for these bullets? i am going to try 3.8gr of titegroup.

Update.

Just took a factory round and backed out the seating die, set the crimp to that factory round and now chambering at 1.20 :) i guess to much crimp, my bad.

I use Unique at 5.4gr.

I think the latest Lyman Cast Bullets Handbook lists loads for this boolit and thus should spec the OAL if you need another reference.

I just did some chronographing of this same boolit in my Ruger P-90 using Titegroup, Bullseye, and WW231.

All boolits seated to a COL of 1.175", Fiocchi LP primers.

Lee 230 gr. TC cast in an alloy of 75/25 wheel weights and linotype (BHN 19), sized .452"

4.5 gr. Titegroup 842 fps. Avg.
4.5 gr. Bullseye 800 fps. Avg.
5.5 gr. 231 889 fps. Avg.

My P-90 is a tank, all these loads are fine for it.....YMMV! All disclaimers and warnings to work up from below apply.

Thanks 454PB, i will start at 1.2 aol and 4gr titegroup, work up to max 4.8 using cz97B

CZ's have very short leades. As long as you don't compress the charge you will be fine. I use the TC designed boolits in 9mm, 40S&W and .45ACP CZ's. Feeds well and accurate. What's not to like?

I had the same issues as you when I tried to load the bullets right out of the mold after tumble lubing. I would seat the bullet down to where the taper meets the vertical, close the bell with the Lee FCD and the round would plunk into the barrel perfectly. My COAL was 1.17" and I really wanted to seat it to 1.19", but it would not go that last 20 mils even when racking with the slide. I would have to push the slide forward with my thumbs.

I then bought the Lee sizing die and now the bullets can be seated as high as I want without problems (just be sure they will fit in the magazine). I now seat to 1.19" and can load to a slightly higher velocity without going over pressure.

With my 1.19" COL bullets I like 4.7g Bullseye, 5.5g Unique for normal loads or 3.0g Clays and 3.0g Red Dot for light recoil loads. I really like the Lee TL452-230TC bullets. All 6 drop immediately out of the mold as soon as I open it and they feed perfectly in my old temperamental Thompson AO 1911 which usually chokes on anything other than round nose bullets.

I like 4.5gr Bullseye. Loaded some the other day with 5gr Unique and they seemed to shoot good.
1.170 OAL. Nice boolit.
