im looking to get a new hollow point mold for 45ACP but cant decide between these two.

ones 200gr brass mold and the other is 230gr aluminum mold.

what grain would you go with.

230 aluminum.
one because of the weight [it'll be more like 215 with the hollow]
you'll be fighting heat with either.

Personally? 200 grain.
200 just feels snappier than 230. Might be my imagination but it seems like my 1911s cycle faster with 200 grainers. However, profile would be a major part of my decision.

If it is the MP 200 RN HP, jump on it like a chicken on a june bug!

That is a wonderful design and works fantastically well, accurate, feeds perfectly and
expands wonderfully if cast soft. This one is with the penta pin installed. Penetration
in ballistic gel is right at twice what I get in my media (saturated phone books or newsprint)

that is indeed the mold that i was referring to. thank you for the info. I think ill take your advice. By the way what dia are the boolits dropping out of that mold? Just curious cause my lee 452 mold was dropping .456-.457 and i cant feed them through my .452 sizer die.
Also do you have yours drilled for probe? and would you recommend that?

MP molds drop about .002 or .003 larger than the designation number.

You will not be sorry you bought that mold! It is a work of art to look at and a joy
to use and makes wonderful projectiles. No need for a probe IMO, I think even owning
a thermometer for the metal is needless silliness. The mold and boolits will tell you if
they need hotter or cooler, independent of what some instrument might say. Suppose
when you are starting out the probe says 475F. What do you do? No idea, right?
Look at the castings and decide whether you need hotter metal or casting faster, etc.
The numbers don't mean squat by themselves.

PERHAPS you could duplicate a favored condition a touch easier the next time, but really
the castings are the REAL test. Suppose you duplicate the number but the castings suck?
What do you do now? Sorry ,but it seems like massive overkill to me. Kind of like having
a micrometer to measure 2x4s for framing a wall. Frankly, I think many folks are MASSIVELY
overthinking this whole thing, not rocket science.

well i think ive heard all i need to hear. Thanks for the sage council and im gonna order right now.
As far as having a thermometer for the metal, if your melting WW its a good thing to have just in case you miss a zinc W. You wont have to worry about it melting. I always find 1 piece of zinc that i miss everytime but since i have a thermo i dont have to worry.(Unless you were talking about a thermometer for the already cleaned ingots. in which case i agree with you.) The probe may be excessive but could be a nice accessory just for experiments down the road. But like you said i dont feel its necessary either.

What mold is that? M & P? I think I see a .45 in my future.

I have the new NOE 230gr hp mold(it drops at 236gr ave,) they are some nice bullets also,I would favor the heavier one for hunting purposes. So far some of my expansion testing has been good, but it has either rained or snowed for the last couple weeks here and I haven't been able to test my softer range lead samples yet. I don't think you'll go wrong with either mold.
PS, I have the small hp for this testing, the large hp may not be as good due to overexpansion.

I decide on the 452 200 hp 4 cav mold from Mihec. I cant wait to get my hands on it.

I have both. A Lym Dev, which comes in right @ 200gr. The other is a pentapoint converted Lyman that comes in @ 215gr. Both expand well, either will do.

I have the 4 cav Mihec 200 HP and I'm ashamed to say I've never cast with it. I do, however, have the same one in a 2 cav that I have gotten hot - it is a very nice mold. I need to take the time to pour up about 1000 of that boolit and get some shooting in. enjoy Mike

I've shot more 200g SWC in my 45s than any other boolit. They are hard to beat especially if you will shoot several hundred per week.

I load and shoot 230 HB and HP for self defense.

I don't shoot many 200s nowadays, mostly 230s.

If you can afford both moulds get'em both.

I vote for the 230 myself.

I have the molds for the 200 SWC, 230 TC and 255 SWC, all aluminum LEE, given that my HK Mark 23 pistol shoots well with both bullets, the best results I've had with the 200 SWC.

I have MP HP 200 452 mold..its a beauty..Also load some 230 TC from Lee and 230 grains coper plated but seems that 200 grains cycle gun faster....So my last reloads al all 200 grains..

what kind of alloy you use for HP? Nice expansion

That is range salvaged lead with a bit of pure Pb added down to 8 BHN, pretty soft alloy.
