I've been rearranging my shop/loading room to make things more convenient and while storing powder I decided to ask the experts/informed on this board the question. Why are Alliant 8lb containers so big?

They must be twice as big as other manufacturers 8lb containers. Do they supply powder to ammunition loaders? I would think much larger containers would be required for this.

Does anyone know?

room for gas if there is a fire, the containers will burn through.
others are designed to burst at the seams.

Probably because what they sell the most in 8 lb. containers is Red Dot and it is a very bulky powder. Shotshell loaders use that stuff by the ton. That would be my guess.

You may be right. The 8 lb jug was of Red Dot. I also had a 1 lb container of Reloder7 that is much larger than 1 lb containers of other powders. An examination of several containers of both Alliant, and Hodgdon looks, to my untrained eye, to be similar. Differing only in size.

Granted, Red Dot is bulky but that jug would hold 8 lbs of Trail Boss.
