My 788 in .22-250 is 43 years old and has seen a lot of rounds go down the tube.

I came across a barreled 788 receiver in the same cartridge and am wondering if I should remove the newer (to me) barrel and install it on my old receiver or stick my bolt in the "new" receiver and lap it to come up with enough bearing surface on the lugs to be acceptable. The barrelled receiver I bought did not come with a bolt. I assumed the bolt handle broke and the guy sold the thing for parts. (Don't know this for sure, though.)

I guess I am asking what the proper thing to do would be?

Any thoughts on how much bearing surface needs to engage on the rear locking bolt?

first thing I'd do is track down some Go NoGo gauges and check the "New" one with the old bolt.

then you'll have an idea whether to even bother with Lapping... might need to move the barrel regardless
