What are you using for deer season this year? I would certainly ope you are all using a proper projectile, something naked!

I will be using a CZ 550 in 375 H&H with a 270 gr cast over 27 gr p 2400. At 1700 fps it shoots right to the iron sights on the rifle at 50 yards. Should be perfect for where I hunt.

Back up is same as always- Marlin 1894 CB in 45 colt. 300 gr GB over 10.5 gr of surplus 105 powder. Right at 1100 fps and it shoots great with a receiver sight.

One of two, 50 flinter with pure lead 495 round ball, 60 grns of ffg Goex ticking patch lubed with deer tallow, and 28 ga trade gun, flinter, 530 lead round ball, 70 grns of ffg Goex, ticking patch lubed with deer tallow.

Never tried those funny shiney copper colored things.

Our muzzle loader season is done with and I didn't get one (rare when I can get some time in the woods, not sure what happenned).

This year's season in about three weeks will see me carrying a Savage 99 in .308 with the Ranchdog bullet and IMR4895. I also have a 340 and possibly a 170 pump in .30-30 ready to go with the ideal 31141.

Back up will be a sporterized Swedish Mauser using jacketed stuff. I hope it doesn't coem down to that.

I am planning on using a double rifle in .357 mag with a NOE 36-180 over 6.1 gr Herco. I am 3" high at 70 yards using the lower sight blade. I am expecting range to be 40-60 yards where I hunt. My back up for longer range later in the season will be a 35 Whelen with an Accurate 36-270 FN.

My primary gun is a Ruger new Vaq 7-1/2" in 45 colt. This year I'm shooting the 452-424 HP ahead of 10 gr of unique. Gets me something under 1100 fps.
In case a wall hanger comes thru out aways I also will carry my Rem 760 30-06 shooting the 311041 HP ahead of 21 gr of 2400 for under 1800 fps.
Erik HPed both of these molds and I haven't got a chance to try them on meat yet. Well not exactly true I did shoot a coyote with the 45 but I hit a limb first and the boolit hit the dog sideways. Large entrance hole with 45 cal exit hole. Not a good test but still a dead dog!

Other than that its 50cal flintlock with 350gr slug, button, over 3F.

If I get one early, I will break out Dad's 357mag 3screws blackhawk. That is loaded with NOE 160gr RFN using HS6.

Early 60's model H & R single shot in .30-30. Lyman 311041 at 181 grains over 28 grs IMR-4895. Rifle is scoped and will put 5 shots in an inch at 50 yds.

Back up rifle is a Marlin .357 lever action shooting the 358156 at 164 grs over 14.5 grains of H110. Again, rifle is scoped and will put 3 shots in 1-1/2" at 50 yards, but the best I can get in 5 shots is around 2 - 2-1/2". Not as accurate as the .30-30 but should be fine for short range deer sized targets.

Already took a mule deer doe with a Savage 99 in 284 win and 140 gr barnes XBT. I was backing up my girlfriend so wasn't carrying a cast boolit gun. But I have a cow elk tag for south of Ely NV in Dec and my choices are many. I have narrowed it down to a old marlin in 35 rem with rcbs 250 gr sillywet boolit, model 94 legacy in 38-55 with lee 250 gr, marlin cowboy in 45-70 with hollow point gould boolit or husky in 9.3x62 with noe 280 gr. I will put them all in the truck and they will tell me which one to grab when I get there. Choices are good!

The cowboy and the legacy have tang sights while the other two have 4 power scopes. The hunting should be close and fast but the scopes may come in handy if I have to thread the needle through the junipers. Wish me luck.

Have already broken out the 7mm with, ahem, Bergers on an antelope, hopefully also an elk will fall to that load this season.

Tomorrow i will be using an Austin Haleck .50 with 70gr of Pyro and a patched .490 RB for one of my does, then the Ruger SBH will hopefully make meat with 9.5 gr of flaming dirt (Unique) spurrin' a 240 RCBS Keith on another doe. The Blue Tongue hit our buck population pretty hard here, i don't think i will shoot a buck if i can help it this year.

Good luck or God bless, whichever you believe in, this season to my cast boolit buddies.

My first choice is my Glock 20 with a six inch Lone Wolf barrel. 175 grain Lee TC bullet on top of a few grains of blue dot (i like the flash ). I'm in on a MP 10mm group buy, but no way that will land in time to work up a load for the opening day on Saturday.

Anything over 40 yards gets my Savage 99 in .308. Using a 150 Sierra GameKing on top of Varget.

glad to see a few 99s make the list!!!!!

I am going to give it a go with the Ruger Buckeye blackhawk convertible 32-20/32 mag. Using the 32-20 cylinder of course. Load is a large dose of 2400 and a GB lee mould that 452.1 designed a few years back. FYI it was the 30 PB as I described, 6C. The man could have designed it no better if I were leaning over his shoulder. Another gent took over the GB as time didn't allow me to do a good job of it at the time.
This bullet has worked even better than planned in a lot of 30's as mine drops at .314.
It is stepping out there pretty fast at 1400 and change from the 6 1/2" BH (crono'd).
If that fails I amstill working on a couple of projects for CB's. The marlin ballard rifle is throwing me a fit when digesting cast. I have change the glass I use on it for load testing hoping that is the problem.

I'll probably take a couple of Marlins, a 336 in 35 Rem and a Guide Gun in 45-70. Each will be stoked w/ RD boolits. Will have a RBH in 45 Colt stoked w/ Keith boolits if the opportunity/need arises. For bad weather I have a stainless/synthetic M77 Ruger in 30-06 and for difficult situations I have a new Super Grade M70, also in 30-06. Both my 30-06's are fed Hornady J-word bullets  but they probably won't get out much this year. Good chance I'll have a black rifle along for more intensive varmint/hog population control or social purposes.
If it's my turn to cook the cast iron, food, ice and rifles make my poor old pickup squat pretty good. :bigsmyl2:
I recently acquired a 336 in 30-30 that I hope to take hunting (w/ boolits!) some year soon. I dream of taking a BPCR or even a frontstuffer hunting some year as well.

Taking a number of loads for my thunder sticks. I hunt pretty hard hunted public land so hunter pressure dictates how the deer will move. I've scouted for the sign most of my life and have only seen one buck and one doe come to a scrape. I still like to hunt near buck sign though. For the win 94 30-30, a lee 180 gr 89/8/3 Pb/Sn/Sb behind 33 gr of 4007ssc and a 170 gr sierra flat pt behind 34.5 gr of 4007ssc. I got the jwords at GM on sale spring of 2011 and thought they could be a decent with they're higher BC (been looking at them for 20 yrs). I still need more experience with the cast boolits to be more confident with them. For the Encore 300 win mag, 165 gr speer BT's with 81 gr of Mag pro or 67 gr of 4007ssc. Depending on if I hunt a clear cut, power line, hill top, hard tracking ground, or close knit property lines. Also the Encore will have a 209 barrel with lee .429 240 gr RN/sabots (75 Pb/25 COWW), maxi-balls, and a PRB won't be to far away. The Mossy 835 will have sabot slugs, possibly Lee drive key ( i'd really like to shoot a deer with one of those), and my home brew of lee .311's WDWW at .314 buckshot. I hunt in both rifle and shotgun zones.

Unfortunately, the great state of Ohio does not allow the use of center fire rifles for deer hunting, for whatever reason. Now if you are shooting woodchucks, skunks, foxes, pigs, you can carry what ever you want. Because that makes perfect sense,,,,,,,

Correct, in Ohio shotgun with slug, muzzleloader, or handgun with a straight wall case .357 caliber or larger is legal to take deer. (archery too)
In my case, I plan to use my trade musket with shot for turkey, and round ball for deer.

rover,

My friend and I have converted the 45-70s to smokeless MZ with a couple of different BPs. The cheap and quick method is to machine a steel or brass BP with the exterior dimensions of 45-70 fired brass. We then bore out most of the plug, bore a primer pocket for a "o" ring & 209 primer and then drill a flash hole, approx. .035". I then remove the ejector/extractor system from the barrel and epoxy the plug in place. The first gun with the glued BP has many hundreds of rounds down the tube and glue is holding up fine. We also use a reamer to open up the muzzle a little (a .458 throating reamer works great) to allow easy starting of the sabot. Also, cut a 3/8 dove tail on the bottom of the barrel for the ramrod thimble.

THe other method is to remove the extractor/ejector and bore and tap the chamber to fit a Savage 10ml BP. IMO, a lathe is required to do this work. The only issue here is to make sure you correctly "headspace" the screw in Savage BP so that the 209 primer is in correct alignment with the gun closed.

The Savage plug has replaceable vent liners so if the flash hole gets too large then you just replace it. The first plug I described would have to be removed and replaced if the flash hole erodes too much. FWIW, I made one of my BPs with a .060" flash hole and it works fine, you just get primer flattening at a lower pressure than a BP with .035" flash hole.

northern Allegheny county. i hunt small property's, we are thick with deer, but alot of property owners wont allow you on their land. then they complain about the deer eating their plants and landscaping. i am not comfortable with archery. deer have to drop or their lost on land i cant get on. i dont take questionable shots. all my shots have been well within 60yds and most have either dropped or traveled 20 yds or less. that .54 cal ball is impressive. irishtoo

I'll be using a Taylor 56-50 Spencer or a Uberti Win. 73 in 44wcf, both with black powder loads.

Wow, a Spencer. Where do you get 56-50 Rimfire ammo?

It's a Taylor replica 1865 carbine chambered in 56-50 centerfire. Reload for it, so ammo is no problem.

S&W 686 8" barrel using Hornady 180gr HP-XTP. Backup will be a Traditions Pursuit UL .50 muzzle-loader, 360gr mini-ball; getting the load together still. The backup for that will be a Remington improved choke 12ga pump shotgun using Remington Express Magnum slugs.

kevmc, nice outfit and shooting to match! I will be using my poor mans double rifle ( really got that thing singing) in the thick stuff and along the fields I will be using a 7mm remmag with 168rcbs. Will have a jacketed cartridge along in case something appears on the horizon! Hope to get released from surgeon today then I can act normal again!

For deer, 243 winchester shooting 90gr. Hornadys....for elk it'll be either an 06' with 180's or a 308 experss with factory 160's. We don't seem to have the choices a lot of you fella's have in your state..ONE deer, (in my county where I hunt it has to be 3pt or better {thats a 6pt to a lot of you}) and for elk the same....so I use what I think works the best for the type hunting we have...and thats a quality jacketed bullet...

Shoot straight!

I'll either have my 10mm longslide 1911 hunter or my Ruger SBHH, both with open FO sights.

Can't wait!!

This year's modern gun season will be my Marlin 1895 .45-70 with a 300 grain boolit over 40 grains IMR 4895. For our second muzzleloader season it'll be my NEF Huntsman with a 250 grain Lee REAL and 70 grains Pyro. Took the Marlin out today. Off the shooting sticks at 60 yards it was certainly capable of minute of deer accuracy. Probably do even better on the benchrest and without the 40 pound trigger pull.
