Well, I woke up this morning. Under the impression that today was the Big Tulsa Gun Show today. After getting up, dress, watching the news and after driving about half way to the fairgrounds I remembered that it wasn't today, but rather next week. Upset, and still hung-over from the night before, I decided I better just go ahead and get myself a bite to eat then head home.

So I spot "The Farm" strip mall just ahead, and remember that one of my favorite deli's "Margarette's" is located there. Margarette's is a nice German Deli, with fantastic Rubens, and Goulash that is to die for. So after a bowl of goulash, and a hefty sandwich, I decide that its time to go. Suddenly I realized that I was only about a mile of one of the better gun stores in town. Not really looking for anything particular, I was actually going to the gunshow to pick up a couple K of 9mm jacket bullets to reload for the indoor range that my boss likes to go to.

So a quick drive over to the store, and what would you know....there is a parking spot right up front. This is unusual since this store is usually packed on the weekends. So I stroll inside, and remember I'd been keeping my eyes out for a decent RIA 1911. After walking around and spotting a couple RIAs, I laid my eyes on a little compact model that was in the glass case. I politely asked the man if I could examine it. And after about 2 seconds of being in my hand I looked up and said,"Lets start the paperwork."

So needless to say I walked out the door with my first 1911, a RIA 1911-A1CS with GI sights, and a beaver tail.

One great thing about a decent 1911, when you're sober the next morning they still look as good as you thought they did the night before.

Maybe the parking space was empty right in front because everybody was in Tulsa looking for the gun show.

There are so many reasons people love their 1911's. Not the least of which is they just look right - and beautiful. Good luck with your new toy. I think you're gonna like it a lot. Your other pistols are going to feel neglected, though. At least for a while. So be nice..enjoy Mike

Goulash, a Ruben & a new 1911 in one day!

I'd love to hit that trifecta!

Congratulations on your 1911.

Well I know the feeling.... all to well.
Went to gunshow yesterday morning. total flop, not worth the money to get in this time around. So we take off, go to a gunshop, down the road from the gunshow. We hit all the local shops, after we leave a show.
Well I walk in, and lo and behold, theres a 1911 screaming out.....look at me, aint I pretty....touch me, pick me up, feel me in your hand. So I did....all I remember is I'll take it, next thing I know I'm walking out with my new American Classic Commander.
Have no clue why i bought it...except the grips are pretty.
I need another 1911 like I need another hole in my head. Lord knows how many I have in the safe I've forgotten about that are still NIB's.
But heres a pic, still haven't cleaned off the shipping oil, it's heavily coated.

Congrats on the Rock Island, I have 5 of them, Two I bought just the frames and made them dedicated .22's. Also have 3 other RIA's, Great value guns, Great shooter's. Enjoy your new toy..They also have one of the best customer service in the industry, If something isn't right, They will fix it.
All of mine functioned perfectly. I recomend to take it apart and give ita good cleaning, then relube. They usually come fairly greased up internally.

Congrats on the new 1911.

I love a good Reuben as well, but prefer something else for breakfast.
Now back in my drinking days, a big bowl of menudo with onions, jalapenos, and tortillas from the Mexican restaurant was the ticket.

My first (and only so far) 1911 is an RIA 1911 standard. First gun I bought in Oregon (what a joy it is to purchase something without being treated like a terrorist or criminal!). I've been shooting it for three years, 95% with reloads and home cast bullets and it has had no, yep no, failures to feed, fire, or eject. My shooting spot has a 15 yard "lane" that I use and on a good day can keep 2" groups easily. Been thinkin' about geting another...

Breakfast of Menudo, ummmm! Only way to go.

My shooting buddy was having a tough time finding a 9mm he liked. He bought and sold several in his quest. Most didn't feel right in his hand and the accuracy was far below his expectations. When I finally got him pinned down on what the problem was, he said, "I can't find one that shoots as well as my 1911." So, in a duh moment, I told him to buy a 1911 in 9mm. He bought a Rock Island and absolutely loves it. Great value in a gun. I've been thinking I need one of their compact carry models for myself.

While I don't shoot it as much as I would like, and have several other style handguns, the 1911 is still my favorite design! My very first 1911 style pistol was a small .22 cal Llama that was a mini 1911! Since then I've owned a Colt Gold Cup, a Colt Commander (both of them got stolen :( ) and my current 1911 is a Taurus PT1911. I even have a couple of extra barrels laying around here, one an old 45ACP that was in a box of parts my father had, and also a brand new Action Arms commander length barrel in 41AE that I got when I bought a bunch of 41AE stuff (loading dies, brass, loaded ammo, and the barrel).

Joe, that restaurant is at the farm on 41st and sheridan. Also, if you want a much better one go to Seigies or however it is spelled. 81st and Sheridan. Both are great German delis. But the later is also a meet market.

And as requested, here is a little bit of gun porn.49360

You can't go wrong with the Lyman 452374. I've shot thousands of rounds of this through my 45's.

Cuz they don't make a .46.

As for the mould question, my one and only (for the ACP) is the RCBS 45-201, but any of the H&G-style 200 grain SWCs work very, very well in every 1911 I've ever run them through. 5.6 grains of HP38/231 has been the go-to load for yeeeeears.

When I get another 1911 these will be the molds I purchase to feed it. The H&G 200gr clone and a 230gr. boolit, both will be in brass made my Tom

Great looking 1911 by the way, let us know how how it shoots.
I've been in the market for another 1911 but other guns have gotten in the way of the purchase.

The Lyman 452460 is a winner, the H&G 68's & clones, the Miha 200gr HP, even RCBS makes a good 200gr - similar to the 452460. They all work. enjoy Mike

All are good moulds but size your bore is probably the best advice so far.

I would also suggest you decide what you want your boolit to do: paper punching=SWC (full wad cutters are often are difficult to feed); steel plate= RN or FP; Hunting=BIG FP (metplat); Self Defense= HP (may even consider j-words here, or learn to swage)...you get the idea.

Just my $0.02.

Happy Trails.

MikeS

Yes, what you plan on doing with the pistol will change what boolit you want. For target shooting any of the H&G#68 clones out there will work great. For a round nose boolit I like the H&G #34 of which NOE makes a great copy. For self defense I got a slightly heavy boolit with a wide flat meplat, the Accurate Molds 45-250A. While lots of folks love HP boolits they need a really soft alloy to expand as 45ACP speeds, and the wide flat meplat will have better penetration, and the flat nose will do more hydrostatic damage than a round nosed boolit.

Jesus.... New gun and mold, not new to casting, lol. And yes to punch paper. And I have been considering the H&G 68 or a clone of it. Gun show is this weekend. May wait and see what I can find there.

Well, I got out to the Range today to shoot the RIA. It went pretty good. Put about 200rds down range at the local indoor. And btw, I just found out that they do allow lead. So I'll be buying a membership there. One thing I did learn about this 1911 though. It likes to through it's brass about 4ft to the front, and 2ft to the right. There are marks on the front of the slide from the brass dinging it.

Your going to throw a lot of lead down range. See if you can reclaim yours and some to boot. While your at it score some brass. Ya gonna need both.[smilie=s:

Lower and flare the ejection port. Probably puts a really nasty dent in the side of the case
that extends up to the mouth, right?

Both are easily done with a dremel and carbide pin router IF YOU ARE STEADY OF HAND
AND EYE, and are on the edge so cold blue really doesn't look bad. Use double layers
of nytrile gloves when using a carbide pin router this way unless you love tiny slivers of
razor sharp steel jammed into your skin and broken off flush. Guess how I know this?

Mold Maker, I'm already working on that one. My boss, who happens to be pretty cool, is a good friend of the owners. So, I think I'm going to get some of his swing in the door. Wouldn't mind a couple hundred pounds of lead and brass every month.

Bill, normally, this would be something I wouldn't mind doing myself. However, this gun is either parked or has a light night nitrate finish on it. So I don't think that bluing is an option. I think I might just order a stainless slide from Caspian, with the ejection port taken care of, and all the bells and whistles. But since this is a bushingless gun, I'd have to have the slide in hand before I'd be able to tell what else I needed to assemble the build.

The problem with 1911s is that you can't eat just one; they're addictive. I think I now have 5, and that's after I gave one to one of my sons. I bought some polymer pistol in .40S&W for another one as reward for finally getting through college because that's what he thought he really really wanted. Now he wants a 1911.

Cheers,

I bought one on impulse also when they were on sale at my LGS for 399. Already have a beautiful Colt and a Kimber but had to have it nonetheless. Shoots as good as the other two, but the trigger stinks especially after I put in a wider spur hammer. I figure it is the perfect gun to attempt my first trigger job on. I really like mine too. Enjoy!
