Hi ya fellas
Well after my posting of "Is there a mold like the Hornady .458 350grRN?" in Cast Bullets and all the wonderful answers and ideas I received, I have gone and done an Internet search for a bullet/mold that Wiljen suggested and came up with one on Ebay the Lyman 457483 AW 378gr GC,I bidded on the mold and won![smilie=w:
It cost me about $88.85 US for it(107-108 bucks Aussie) in very good condition and comes with a nearly full box of 45cal Hornady Gas Checks:-D
The good thing about it,is it has the GC and it's like the profile I wanted, heres a pic of it,What you all think, did they see me coming or not too bad a price,oh the price is with delivery, the mold by its self was $78.00US.
I'm one happy camper now:-D
Anyone got any loads for that style of boolit, trapdoor levels to Ruger #3 levels?
Cheers

I recently got that mold myself . Just getting ready to work up a load will keep you posted. Your mold looks new and since they no longer make them you did ok price wise. Plus those gaschecks are around 30 bucks or so.

Thanks for the reply, they do look new don't they?:-D
I know gas checks for the 45 cal here in Australia are around $56,maybe more depends on where you go:(
I did not know the mold that I just bought is no longer made,no wonder I thought it was a bit higher than Lymans normal price, ohhh well a bargain then:-D
Keep me posted about your findings and loads with the said mold and I'll do the same, when I get it.
Cheers

No. 34570 ! I shot literally hundreds of that bullet in a trapdoor many years ago cast of 1/2 wheelweights and 1/2 lead. I preferred 2400 as the powder then. The Lyman Handbook of cast bullets of 1958 shows as follows: 22Gr.@1275fps and 30Gr.@1650*(MAX). My loads were around 25 grains. The book also shows, as starting loads,24 Gr. 4227@1300fps; 25Gr. 4759@1350fps; 26Gr. 4198@ 1350. Good Shooting! BvT

Hey BVT
Thanks for that,I have a bit of 4227IMR left is that what you used?
What sort of accuracy were you getting? I thought this bullet would make a nice candidate for a softnose as well as the normal WW/lead bullet.
Thanks again
Cheers

No34570, I've been using the 457483 for awhile in my Marlin 1895 and it's been one of my favorites. Cast out of wheel weights, the boolits weigh right around 400 grains and you'll find plenty of reloading data for that weight boolit. My best load with it and the Lee 457-405 has been 50 grains of IMR 3031. I've never chronographed the load with the 457483 but the velocity with the heavier Lee boolit is 1625 fps. I recently sent mine off to Buckshot to have it hollow pointed and am waiting it's return. Good luck with your mold.

Save teh 5744 for teh kids on the 4th of July and put some 4198 or Rx7 under those bullets. 5744 turned out miserable for me in .45-70 and .45-70. Some guys swear by it but I think more swear AT it. I know a couple of friends and I do.

I had similar problems with trapdoor level loads using 5744, especially in cold weather (10 - 20 F). Usually one of 20 that didn't fire, with the powder scorched but not burned. I haven't had that happen in the summer, but it is no good in the winter. I also had good luck with Hodgdon 4198 and with Reloader 7 and Unique for light plinking loads.

Finally got around to shooting a few of these no.34570. I used 28 grains of a.a. 5744, at fifty yards they made one hole .471 in size.I tried several groups and they all shot about the same. Yep Im gonna try some 2400 and Rx-7, probably Maineboys load of 3031 to.Will work up to higher charges of 5744 also if it ever stops raining here.Hope your stepdad is doing ok. mark

Well no.34570 havnt heard from you lately, hope things are going ok for you and your family. I have tried several diffrent loads with the 457483, right now cast out of 50/50 ww ,pure lead 49 grains of h322 has worked best for me.Thats with winchester cases and cci 200 primers, I am shooting a marlin guidegun so my overall length is shorter than your ruger .oops almost forgot those are water quenched boolits.

Hi muffinman
My Step dad is doing alot better than what he was, been busy with work and going over 500k's nearly every weekend to visit him in hospital.
Done a little bit of experimenting with the Boolit using Unique 12.5grs,not bad, accuracy is good, recoil is ok,but I think I can do better with another powder, but which one?,I don't know?
I used a gas check, might try teflon tape around it like hs45/70 suggested to me,I used the last of my Winchester primers and only have Remington left,so will have to try a new load with them.
Keep us informed mate and I'll try to do the same.
Cheers

............About my favorite powder in the 45-70 is 4198. I DO use a bit of dacron in the case above the powder.
