Auction update for the Napoleon Cannon Barrel

This would be neat to get going and post you progress in the special project section.



These are the picture of the actual Cannon well not this one. but one the same style and size. This one is a customers and will be shipped out tomorrow but the one you win will be the same.

Also If the bid goes over $200 I'll include a kit that will include a Garrison carriage brass wheels and what ever wood you will need to complete the cannon. However the carriage shown is a another customers in which i have to make a recoil rail like on my Howitzer setup.

The one shown is just a rough approximation of what you'll receive. You will need to do some sanding and staining and your choice of walnut mahogany or Oak like shown.

Looks like fun - I went to a black powder rondezvous one time in southern Oregon and someone had a little howitzer they fired off but there was an oops and the ball landed on the lake shore instead of further in the lake - yep, right in someone's canoe

CC- how do you attach the trunnions, or do you start with a casting? I have a 1½"x 20" piece of manganese bronze I've been threatening to turn and bore in my lathe for a miniature cannon barrel, but the attachment of the trunnions has me stumped (as to the safety/efficiency of soldering them in place).

On the larger ones he thread is 3/4 - 16 and they hold great I also lock tight them in i have never had one come off even with 1200 grains of BP

But som weld hem or just press hem in below are the pic of the 1 inch bore cannon it looks much better than welding unless you clean it up

Thanks, Austin. Concerning the depth of the threads on the trunnions- how much web thickness remains between the .50 bore and the bottom of the trunnion threads on the miniature brass cannons? I'm making mine from 1½" bronze bar stock, and am contemplating a .62 bore. If I kept the treads shallow (say three full threads) and soldered them too, do you think they'll stay put?

As far as how much i leave .100 to the bore so i assume on yours the dia at the trunnion location is going to be around 1.400 with the taper so if you go .690 you would have .710 of threads divided by 2 and each side would have .355 - the .100 so you would have .255 of thread distance for holding and if you use less say a 7/16-20 thread you would have about 5 threads. Thats the size i use on that size barrel.

And i never had any issues and if you solder it i would use grade 5 silver solder but the loctite works great i had to heat up one barrel to remove the trunnion to polish it i had even put it in the collet to turn it and sill it wouldn't budge

If you need the tap and die i can send it as long as you pay the postage and if you break it to replace it OK

Oh i just seen its 62 cal so just add 0.0035 no biggie just figure 1/4" of threads fron the outside dia also if you use a shoulder trunnion thats about 0.050 socket and that would make it .200 of thread 4 threads a little over your 3 threads :-o

Thanks again! I feel comfortable going ahead with it now. Thanks for the offer of the taps, but I have, literally, thousands- from #0 up to "you need both hands to lift it"! (The legacy of a pack rat machinist father and grandfather.)
