Been wanting a bolt action 7.62x39, found a Remington 799 for $400. My Remington 770 in 308 Win is not a quality gun. Thoughts on the 799 model, wondering if I should go take a look at it.

Alternatively I'm thinking about an Encore, I know it's not bolt action but I'm flexible.

those 799's in x39 are few and far between.

Think it's worth buying?

Definitely so. $400 is cheap for one

Rest easy, the 799 is a Remington eastern european import Mauser variant, not a Remington USA product, so you can count on it being of much higher quality.

Those are the Serbian mini Mauser's, think Interarms Mark X. Remington didn't try to market them, never saw one in person.

they were called charles daley before remington took them over.
i had one in 7 mauser that was my favorite rifle for a looong time till i got my ackley built.
i miss that little rifle.
any way remington imported the actions made the stocks for them and jacked the price up a few hundred bucks.
pretty much a 98 mauser with a remington made laminated stock [airc they sold for 7-900 new]

but yeah for 400 i'd have a hard time not buying it especially since i have a grundle of x39 brass and a mold and dies.
just haven't found the bolt gun just yet.

I contacted the owner, funny guy, he didn't seem to want to sell it. He kept trying to talk me out of buying it. Really nice guy though.

He has some brass and other goodies he is going to dig out and he will call me "in a few weeks." lol

I hope he does. [smilie=s:

They are a decent little gun. Actually made by Zastava and were imported by Interarms as the Mini-Mauser then by Charles Day prior to Remington's shortlived effort.

The few Remingtons that I saw had a better stock than the Charles Daly that I have. My barrel slugged at a very smooth and consistant .311".

The trigger is a bit touchy to get adjusted and still keep the safety working, but it can be done. I would buy another one for $400.00.
