Because the whitefish are finally running good!
Lots of fish tacos in my future.
The big girl in the middle was big enough to put me in the top spot for tourney going on here. (3.20 pounds) If it makes it through tomorrow, I'll win some kind of prize from the store putting on the tourney.
Gonna hit them again tomorrow too :)

We jig for them. They hang pretty tight to the bottom. Cast up stream, jig the lure back to you. You loose LOTS of jigs on submerged trees & rocks. Enough that I started making my own. I mean, I got lead right?

Are those shad, or herring ? I fished for them with a fly called a herring dart.
they have no teeth correct ? and a strange bone structure.

These are Lake Superior Whitefish, residents of Flathead Lake here in NW Montana.
Imported and planted here in the early 1900's from the great Lakes. Purported to now
make about 80 % of the bio- mass in Flathead Lake.
In the fall, they run the river to spawn. Semi-weird bone structure and paper lips w/o teeth.
You can't "horse" these in or yer gonna loose it.

Very light texture, delicate, white meat, and very tasty, almost as good as cod IMO

I'll most likely give them a try next week, Jim. The river is low enough, it should be easy to find a good channel to fish.

We have them here in the Clarks Fork of the Yellowstone.

Rick, we've been fishing just east of the big stump above the bridge,
from a boat. they where catching them from the bridge still when we left at 12:30
Upstream side harder to net but they havent been hanging below the bridge yet
