Went out this evening to a small tributary of the main river I fish. This is the stream:

First fish was a nice pan sized rainbow on a size 16 smelt copy I tied the other evening:

The next was a bigger brown trout just on dusk on a "matukabou" I tied with a white body, barred olive marabou and a couple of rainbow flashes down the sides.

Great evening out and better than expected. Griffin cat seems to think the catch is for him. HHHMMM

Nice size trout you have down there, are the natives or stocked?I always wanted to try my hand at fly fishing.

Boondocker: Trout and salmon are introduced to NZ. The fish from last evening are small but the stream is too and it has taken me a year to work out how to fish it. The flow is very clear almost every day, shallow and sees a lot of anglers. Were it not that I am now tying streamers I am sure I would be still coming home empty handed. That makes the catch even more rewarding.

There is a great deal of satisfaction in catching them on your homemade lures. Way to go Jeff!

Looks like a good stream to try dry flies on at dusk.

I hear you have some MILD sauce courtesy of a U S ARMY fellow to spice the fish up a bit.:kidding:

Great catch but where were the young anglers.

Yes, absolutely, but one step at a time for this re learning angle. :bigsmyl2:

Great catch but where were the young anglers.

Taking them to the kids ponds later today. The ponds feed into this lil stream.

Nice fish Jeff. What are NZ's native stream species?

Good question, what did Gollum pic out of that stream?

Deer hair poppers or just a piece of thin foam tied winglike on a hook. Most of the time they just suck it down and you never see a strike. Can you use yarn salmon eggs there?

Those look like Atlantic Salmon

Their are native fish but they are small and rare. The Maori's manage to clean out the Moa birds single handedly so there was not much hope for whatever was left.

Here is dinner from last evening. MAN that trout was good. Much better than the pale flesh trout from the main river.
