The last custom build I made from the action up. I made it in the winter of 01-02, a couple years after Cait was born form an old 38 action I had laying around. I reworked the trigger to make it adjustable, found a 6mm Douglas blank fitted it and chambered it to a 6mm-06. I took a nice walnut blank and a couple pieces of maple for the end caps and went to work with a hammer, chisel, and a draw knife. I made the stock short for a woman or a kid, and when I was completely finished with it it went in the back of the safe after I loaded a box of shells for it and tested it.

A few weeks ago Cait come to me and ask if she could deer hunt this year, and I told her she could. She has been bugging me since then about what rifle she was going to use. This evening while she was out squirrel hunting I pulled the rifle out of the safe along with the ammo for it. When she got back I gave it to her and we went out on the back deck and I let her shoot it off hand at my 10 x 10 gong set up at 100 yards. There is no rest on the back deck so she had to shoot it off hand. I let her shoot it 8 times and she hit it every time. I think she is ready to deer hunt with it. Here are a few pictures of her with the rifle and the rifle.

Best wishes,

Joe

I would like a rundown on how to make an acceptable trigger pull on these rifles. I have similar plans for an already tricked out Arisaka still in 6.5 Jap and maybe another one I have that was rechambered to the 257X6.5. I might rebarrel the converted one as it is kind of bubbafied already. One is in a Fajen stock and one is in a bishop. Both have terrible triggers.

Nice work by the way!

Nice looking gun and her smile makes it all worthwhile. Let us know when she draws blood with it.

Thanks for all of the compliments fellas. I will keep you posted on her deer hunt on the 3rd of Nov.

FRKelly74,

I will in the next couple of days post pics of my design to turn military triggers into adjustable ones. It requires for tools a drill press, a good set of drills, a good tap and die set, a bit of sheet metal aprox 16ga, a way to cut and bend it, and that is about it. Oh you will also need some tiny set screws, and lock nuts for them. As I said I will post photos of on and it is pretty self explanatory.

Joe, very nice and appropriate for her. She definitely seems to appreciate it.

Have you ever looked at the 1895 Steyr trigger? If you can solve that one, I'd like to know. Already reduced the spring, by the way.

Just a feeling, but I have a feeling you will have to add to the stock before long. lol
They grow up fast.
