Would it be prudent to use 500 Linebaugh data for the 500 JRH? I know the max pressuer for the JRH is 45K and the Linebaugh is 50K. But if you back off the charge say 15% souldn't that be safe? I see more data out there with more powders for the Linebaugh that I have not seen on any JRH data.

Thanks,
Mike

I don't know.
I would call Jack Huntington or try a search.
15% might be too much reduction with slow powder like H110 or 296.
I have some loads from jack but the copy is so faded I dare not try to read it.
I have no loads for other powders.
I use a 400 gr PB boolit with 29.5 gr of 296 and a Fed 155 primer.
My 440 gr PB uses the same load for 1350 fps from the 7-1/2" BFR, JRH. Ease up on these with a little reduction but don't reduce too much as with any gun with ball powder. Do NOT use a rifle primer!
The gun is amazing and I have shot many, many groups at 100 yards under 1".
This is my best 50 yard group.

Wow, that is some amazing shooting!!! I have a BFR with 6.5" Bbl. 44man I am using 500 S&W brass cut down....I am stuck with having to use rifle primers.

You're not stuck using rifle primers. Just put the Large pistol Mag primers in those pockets. It will be fine. The .500JRH brass is cut for rifle primers too and it doesn't hurt anything.

These things will shoot!

My best load so far is a 440gr plain base from a mold I had made at Mountain Molds over 29gr of H110 with a Fed 155 primer. It's pretty close to 44man's boolit, but a little different.

Below is a 5 shot 25yd group with open sights. I am sure the gun can do better!

Does jack's brass have pistol or rifle primer pockets?

Does jack's brass have pistol or rifle primer pockets?
They all have rifle pockets, same as the 45-70 has them but don't use them. They increase pressure too much.
It is fine having the primer a little low.

Rifle. Doesn't hurt to use pistol primers in the BFR's for sure. I do the same thing with my .475 Linebaugh.

When I first got both of mine (.475 and JRH.) I talked to Hodgdon's and they said not to use rifle primers because of pressure issues.
There is a problem to watch for with .500 S&W brass, some was made for a LP primer and the rest is LR. Never put a LR primer in the LP pockets. Guns have blown up when the high primer in another chamber slam fired against the recoil plate.
I even use the 155 in my 45-70 BFR because it proved more accurate. You can use a LR in it since the case is large enough. Just didn't work as good with the powder I use. If I was to go with a larger amount of slower powder, I would test again.

Thanks for the info.
For your safety.
Primer pocket size does not dictate the primer you should use.
Case size is more important.
You will love your BFR.
It is crazy such recoil can pack boolits better then a rifle.
One caution with the JRH! [smilie=s: Never shoot a deer facing you unless you want a bucket of green slime.

Yes sir!
My JRH was bought for hunting but the thing grows on a guy. Friends come to shoot and it is the one I take, next is the .475 while the little .44 begs me!
The JRH is a pain to load because I need lanolin on the brass in my .500 S&W dies. Lots of lead too but it is all worth it.
I use hard boolits and entry and exit holes are boolit size and I lose no meat but the insides are mush. I learned a lesson with the facing deer. No Texas heart shots either. :drinks:

First time I ever shot a deer and it went straight up and fell on it's belly without the legs touching! :holysheep
I convinced the deer to walk to me from over 100 yards in the thick, she got clear at 30 yards. I would never get a side ways shot.
