An older man came into our gun club today. He's a trucker hauling chemicals in tanker trucks. He's delving into casting (without supervision) . He said his company puts metal seals on the trucks to prevent theft of whatever chemicals they're carrying. He's melted a quantity of these seals (don't know the melting temp.) and asked me to see if they were safe to cast into boolits. I tried to get a reading on my Lee hardness tester but it wouldn't make a mark. Does anyone know what these seals are made of and should he use them for casting? Since I haven't gotten the hang of getting answers here, please email an answer @ tmattox69@yahoo.com.

I'd be willing to bet they are zinc

+1. Not good. The days of lead tamper seals are over.

They are Zinc. How else would they allow these into CA?

If they are zinc, could he not get in contact with the gentleman that trades lead for zinc lb. for lb. to make cannonballs?

Put a drop of Muriatic acid on one and if it "fizzes" it is Zinc.
