I have purchased a pre-64 Winchester 94, after getting some information from this thread:

http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?t=158429

About whether to get an old or new Win 94.

I settled on pre-64 after being offered one for less than $AUD500 in great condition:

The only bugbear was that it had the base for a period correct steel Lyman sight but nothing else:

After some suggestions from Blindeye here on the forum, I was able to buy the windage bar, aperture and other parts on Ebay however the elevation screw was now the only missing part.

Lyman were terrific and sent out replacement elevation spring, elevation thread and screw head that all fitted onto the original (the postage to Australia was only $US4! great service) now all is fitted:

So now I have a pre-64 30-30 with all steel Lyman sight and need to get casting for it.

It has 66a stamped on the back - you can just make it out on the rear of the block mounted to the receiver on the lower photograph. The elevation knob is not period correct - this is new one from Lyman for their current sight however fortunately it does fit the older steel sight.

This is the period correct elevation knob in an advertisement, 66 sight is a lower left:

This is a 1963 rifle according to serial 2587XXX so this Lyman seems correct.
