A friend was up at the local shooting area and was picking spent bullets and found about 30 of these. They measure 2 inches long and are .825" in diameter on the big end. The lead is pretty hard and they weigh right at 3 ounces each. Someone thought they were slugs from a 10 gauge. What's the general consensus? Dale

They look like battery terminals, but they are a projectile of some kind. The large end fits inside the plastic sleeve.

That sure looks like the right thing. I can't imagine the recoil on one of those.

Yep, 8 ga zinc slugs sounds just about right. My presumption, based on the box markings at the above link, is that they aren't intended to be fired from the shoulder, but rather are used in an application similar to jet tapping, or to apply zinc posts on steel, instantly.

That said, there were 8 bore express rifles that shot bullets about that big, made of soft lead -- and they were doubles, which implies someone would pull the second trigger after pulling the first. I suppose a charging lion or elephant would make that an easier decision...

a 10 ga is .775 bore diameter.
i'd go with 8 guage also, they make shells to knock build up off in some mining, and in cement making operations.
they shoot the walls of something to knock the build-up off.
i have a shell or two somewhere they use for doing it.

I know that 8 ga "slugs" are used to knock slag loose inside boilers, but I never
saw one after it was fired.
