View Full Version : How far away is your shooting range/location?

The closest place for me to go shooting is about 40 miles away. This really crimps my ability to actually get out on the range as I have to plan on at least an hour and a half drive time (about 45 minutes one-way, generally) plus about another 45 minutes of set-up, take down, etc. With shooting time, I generally have to plan on either a full morning or full afternoon to even get a few rounds downrange. I am not yet retire and no prospects of that happening soon (thanks to my previous employer), the only times are on weekends. (This is not to mention the cost of gas to get to/from, either).

As this country continues to get less and less firearm friendly, I don't see the situation improving in my lifetime. I was wondering if that is the situation with the majority of shooters these days or do most of you have something available closer too you?

25 feet , in my back yard, but that's soon to change, there is a new house going up within 50 yards in the direction of my berm I can still shoot by law but I want to maintain the peace.

The nearest DNR public range is 36 miles and private range is 45 miles both round trip.

My 50 yard pistol/smale bore range is about 150 feet from the house. Closest place I can shoot high power at 100 yds. is the 'coon huntin' club's property, 13 miles.

Even though California is not gun friendly at all, I am extraordinarily lucky in that I live in the desert. Our ranges out to 600 yards are 10 miles away and we can get out to 1000 if we are willing to drive 45 miles or so. So far, we can shoot in the desert if we pick up our targets afterward. However, even out here, the population is rising. Also, the State is closing a lot of jeep trails through the desert, for no apparent reason except that they can.

The old issues of Shooting and Fishing and The American Rifleman made note of the rapidly increasing population back East and the closure of most of the long ranges, like Creedmoor. It's been going on for a long time; it's a fortunate community (East or West) that can get 200 yards to shoot over anymore.

15 miles to the public range. 100yds max. Lots of free brass. Outside, no cover.

15 miles to private range. 950yds max. Safe as only one person is shooting at anytime. Nice heated shack. shoot all year long if you can make it down the drive.

30 minutes to a friends back yard, 90 minutes to a private range I belong too, 100 yds max. Used to be able to shoot off of my back porch, but that is not an option anymore. Kinda stings, all the imports and invaders moving in around here, right in my firing lanes!

I'v e got a military range less than two miles from the house but its not available all the time since training takes precedence so I go to a range about 30 miles from the house that is setup for pistol to rifle 25-100yards. Hardest part is actually having the free time to drive out there and back.

My favorite range is 31 miles away. A few are closer, but not friendly to my disability (hard to access). Half the way is freeway driving, the last 15 miles is through lake areas with narrow winding roads. Traffic can be thick at times. It costs only $4 to shoot all day. They are not open Tuesdays or Wednesdays, and it's crowded on the weekends. I'm retired, so I go during the week. Less traffic, and no waiting.
There is an indoor 50 yard range one mile from my house. They charge $12 for a half hour, ban cast boolits, and all shooting is from a handgun style bench, or offhand. Expensive, pointless and just stupid. What I save in range fees more than pays for the gas.

This is about 300yd from the house. Bottom left across the bottom is a 125yd range. 90* to that is 300yd angling towards top of picture between the trees. In front of the shade shelter are 3 25yd pistol ranges. For 22 I shoot from the front porch at steel swingers. Livin the dream. Of course the real story was that the IPSC club I shot with for 25 years built most of this but we ran afoul of some county zoning ordinance and part of my retirement plan was blown to hell. Upside is that if the shooting isn't organized it is no problem. The only stipulation to shoot on my range is make enough noise to piss off the neighbors and/or screw up their deer hunting.

About 4 miles down the road. The range goes from 5 feet to 1,000 yards depending on how far you want to walk or drive to place and pick up your target.

That is the great thing about Nevada. The entire state is one big range.

It will require an act of Congress to get me back to the East where the walls are closing in.

I belong to one club that has an outdoor range with firing points at 7 yards, 50 feet, 25, 50, 100, and 200 yards and 300 and 500 meters. It is about 15 miles from the house. I am thinking about joining another club that is 6 miles from the house with a 50 foot and 25 yard indoor range and a 3 position 100 yard tube for highpower rifle shooting off the bench (no offhand). The latter range is where I shoot pistol league and I am finding that I need to practice more in the winter but I can't get to the outdoor range because of cold and snow.

~4 miles to the archery, trap,100 yd rifle and various pistol range. Close but rather restricted due to the residential location. Still a great range though.
~45 miles to archery, pistol, 600Yd rifle, skeet, trap range. Cheaper membership, less restricted but way more members.
~100 miles to 1,200 Yd rifle, pistol range. Most expensive, less members, less restricted and 1,200 yards!

One range 6 mi. from the house. 25 yd. pistol and rifle to 485 yds. It's $15.00 to shoot maximum of 3 guns. The owner is very disagreeable and I don't shoot there any more. One range 11 mi. from the house - pistol/rifle to 200 yds. rifle to 1,000 yds. $100.00/yr. dues ($70.00 if you put in 1 work day) - great place to shoot. One indoor range about 20-25 mi. - never been there. One range run by conservation dept. on public hunting land I guess about 50 mi. - never been there.

New indoor range will open at the end of this month. 3 miles from my house. :) 100 hd. rifle range is 15 miles, but it is soooo crowded. Often have to wait a half hour or more to get on the line. 200 to 500 yds. is 80 miles for a highpower range, and any kind of hi-power competition is 100 to 150 miles. These are all one way not round trip! The DFW metroplex is NOT shooter friendly now. We have had three ranges closed down in the last 10 years by population growth, and soon to be four.

I envy you guys who can shoot out your kitchen window!

About 4 miles away. $30 a year to belong, members get a key to unlock the gate at the entrance road. Rifle range goes to 200yds, trap field and archery section. Indoor small bore and pistol in the winter. Very often, I'm the only one there when I shoot, does get busy right before deer season.

Approximately 35 mi. Rifle and pistol ranges. Rifle 100 yds and a 500 yd range that requires an ATV to get to the target position due to huge gullies between shooting position and target. I don't use that one. One hundred yards is my limit with open sights. Scope doesn't extend it much so I'm satisfied. As above, I'm usually there by myself.

About a mile out in the desert to an old fill dirt berm . The last commander closed the public range stating that it was for environmental reasons and on Army land. It was maybe 5 miles from the house, nice range covered tables for the last 7 yrs,30,50,100,150,200 yd target backers . 300 off the left side. About a half mile further down was 2 benches w/steel at 300,500,750,1000,1200 and just weeks before the closure 1500. No warning just shut down.

Hour and a half each way and a large gasoline bill. Actually feel lucky to have a place to shoot. Somehow I got into a private club with great facilities (ranges not buildings) and was just lucky to be in the right place at the right time. Will not shoot indoors at ranges where the general public shoots with the folks who scare the heck out of me and the ventilation is crummy at best. Last time some idiot had the slide of a 25 acp cut the back of his hand and was amazed it moved when it recoiled. That is enough to send me running.

8 minutes to one with a good archery setup. A 300 yard rifle range but poor pistol range. Paper targets only :(

11 minutes to the one I frequent a few times a week. 150 yard rifle, uphill which sucks. Good 25/50 yard ranges for pistol and smaller rifles. One trap range with manual throwers always set up for you to use. Not the nicest grounds but I'm usually the only one there. Only restrictions are no shooting tracers, glass or full autos. On my first visit I watched members shoot a 50 Beowulf through an engine block of a running junk car.

12 minutes to the "pro" trap range where all the members look down on you if you aren't shooting a $10k shotgun. I am no longer a member here.

20 minutes to the shotgun range with multiple skeet towers, a few trap ranges, and they run sporting clays every weekend. Skeet is open two nights a week under the lights.

Within 20 minutes there are two archery only clubs. Both have 3D courses set up and run them almost every weekend.

And within 40 minutes I can think of about another five clubs that I frequent from time to time with friends. There is also a public range 15 minutes away but I haven't been there since I saw some people shooting their Glocks sideways

I can shoot on my property (got 2 acres) but only can get in about 150m max. One close neighbor with horses so I don't shoot a lot on my property, maybe once a month or so, usually rimfire stuff.

so my main shooting spot is in the national forest here in the cascades, got a few favorite spots, one takes about an hour, my best one takes almost 2 hours though, 80 miles, ouch.

I just make a day (or weekend!) of it and shoot a lot in one sitting these days.

skeet range is only 18 miles though, shoot every week.

My cabin is on 150 acres in the Ozark Mountains. Seventy is flat pasture and the rest is up and down with trees. I stay there 4-5 weeks at a time but I only get there 3-4 times a year. My primary residence is 1300 miles east on an island in the Atlantic fishing is great but I have to travel 20+ hours to squeeze a trigger.

Do you need a caretaker??
I do have some free time and I have never been to the Ozarks...

I just started fur hunting for the season so am mainley shooting at coyotes right now.
My shooting locations are anywhere from about 50 to 500 yards.
If I hit they stay pretty well located but if I miss they change locations real fast.

Thanks for the offer, 10x. My oldest son. dil, and 2 grandsons are taking care of things for me. They moved out of city 12 years ago and it was the best thing ever. Life is great there and even better when I'm there!

They all shoot, hunt, fish and ride dirt bikes. Also have Boy Scout camp outs. What's not to love.......

Berm is 100 yards from the rear covered porch. One fifty if I set up on the side of the house. Rural living is great.

I belong to a fairly large local gun club that is about 4-5 miles from my house.

Costs $20/year for dues.
We have a 4-station clay bird range, a four station handgun range with target frames at 7, 15 and 25 yards and a 200-yard rifle range with about 8 stations.
There is also a hi-power rifle range for competition shoots. We have an indoor .22rimfire only range that I have never used in over 35 years.

We have had some vandalism the last couple of years so we have had to put in place some restrictions on types of targets and install a new card-operated gate system on the access road to keep out trespassers.

I need to spend more time there

25 yards out the back door for handgun/small rifle/shotgun, for large rifle 2 or 3 miles to BLM ground, or I can take a gun with me to work and shoot there when I have a free moment.

I can do up to 250 if I mind the curtains....muzzlebreaks are hard on them. [smilie=1: I can do 440yards with a 25 foot walk out the door to the bench. I cannot imagine having to go somewhere else to simply fire a rifle. I would much rather have the ability to kill deer from the yard. My dwelling is an old p.o.s relic but it sits right where I wanna be so I deal with the occassional mouse invader.

15 feet to the 25 ft air gun range with turning target.
17 miles to the 50 ft indoor range and 300 yd outdoor range.
25 miles to the 300yd out door range and 25 yd turning targets.
40 miles to the 100yd out door range.
60 miles to the 25 yd indoor and outdoor range with turning targets
and 100yd out door range.

All are one way and all are private ranges with covered firing points.
Most of the time I'll have the first three ranges all to myself!

Right out the basement door to test loads, my land i have plotted for hunting, but the neighbor has a 100 yard, less than 1000 feet from me. But nothing like sitting on the throne with the 30-30 beside you and miss doe walks past, shoot watch her drop, and continue on with the throne business.

If I need to do a quick test fire with pistol or small bore, about 300 yds.
Local public range(open to public no fee, except for trap/skeet) is 13 miles one way. Can shoot off benches from 50 yds to 800 yds. Covered pistol, covered sillywhet range(must provide own targets), and about 8 ranges that have three sides with dirt berms 20' tall.

I also have a mixture of state/blm that goes for about 120 miles to the west, after that is Arizona. You can shoot as far as you can see. Have to drive about 3 miles to get there.

I cheat,, I built an honest to gosh gun range over the years on my property. We hold USPSA matches there,, but it's not open to the public on any other days. I have 6 bays,, and one bench area. So,,, my range is a few hundred yards from my house.

Several years ago I was looking for some property to buy. Someone asked me what qualifications I had to have. I said just two, I have to be able to pee off the front porch and shoot my guns in the yard. It took awhile but I finally found it.
Opened the back door yesterday morning, sat down on the step to take a rest off my knees and killed a yote about 200 yds out in the hayfield.
I'd already had my morning pee though!

5 minutes to a private range. pistol 25 yds; 50, 100, 200 rifle. All covered. On some days I spend more time opening the gate than getting there;) Look at the tag in my forum name!

40 miles right now.

After the election????

It's extremely bad manners to bring politics into a non-political discussion.

Since you insist, I'll reply that I'm voting for the President out of disgust for political threads on gun boards. Every one I read makes me more certain.

My range is across the 520 bridge, it's usually about 20 minutes.

According to Mapquest I am 1200 miles or so from where I will be living in a few months. They have a pretty good range there I will probably be joining. 21 hours drive time. Better not forget my ammo!
