Need a cast bullet recommendation {brand and weight} for my 44 mag. to be used for bear protection. I know a 454 would be better, but it's what I'm going with. Thanks, Gary

You didn't post a location. Black or Grizzley?

I would be fine w/ a good 250gr LSWC, but carry a 310grLFP or 275gr cup point cast hard. I doubt either stops inside an animal smaller than 1000#.

My choice is a 429244 cast of COWWs + 2% tin at 270 gr fully dressed. I push it right at 1200 fps with a full dose of H110 out of my Colt Anaconda with 4" barrel.

i'm with junior here.
the lee 310, good shape, weight, and a gas check.
some hardness and controllable velocity for follow up shots.

I'm gonna lean towards a 300gr WFN of some sort and some HS-6, H110, 2400, some moderate to magnum powder, and hard cast.

It is not clear if you are casting but it appears you are buying hard cast bullets and the best are for your a[plication are from Beartooth Bullets 325 WLN

I'd recommend a good 12 guage shotgun loaded with slugs.....

I use the lee 310 gr with +p loads of 2400 in my redhawk. I had one brown bear do a bluff charge on me a couple years ago and that 44 mag felt like it was a BB gun. He had my complete undivided attention. I believe it would have done the job as long as I did my part. Lucky for me he lost interest and he went his way and I went the other way ( looking over my shoulder the whole time ).

Bigger heavier the better, I agree, the lee 310gr if you must use 44mag. 12guage with slugs or a large bore rifle would be much better.

Anyone familiar with Last Cast bullets?

super hard and super expensive.
make sure you get at least 430 diameter.
there are a couple of custom casters on the sigh.
i would try the want to buy section first, and pick up 50 or so from someone here.

Bullet or boolit?

Speer 240 FMJ bullet or Keith 250 cast from AC WWts driven at about 1200 fps from
a .44 mag will penetrate much deeper than 220 JSP from a .30-06, based on testing
with wet newspapers at the Linebaugh seminar. .44 Keith 250 penetrated 27 inches
straight and true, the 220 from 30-06 penetrated 18 inches.

Surprised nobody mentioned Ranch Dog's 265 gr RNFP. Excellent bullet designed for hunting...

MP 432256 (Keith#503 clone) 253g over 22g 2400 tops out at 1500 fps out of a 4" Colt and should go strait through bone for 2 holes. Still awaiting bear testing but it will penetrate over a foot of solid Cedar.

Edit: If you don't cast contact Happy7 Vendor/Sponsor here. I believe he casts them.

Thoughts: If a bear is moving fast maybe a center mass shot might make sense but I would want a load that would take out the spine. If it didn't kill no legs would buy time for a followup.

I carry the same boolit I shoot everyday, just loaded a little hotter.

wlc is right about a shotgun but I'd never be that disciplined. Gotta be something I strap on in the morning and take off at night. Where my cabin is ain't nobody commin' to the rescue.

I Bow to real experience but there have been few posts.

I do have bear. Going by the tracks, size of the poop, and what they use for chew toys the adults have to be at least double my weight.

Another question?

Are you going to cast your own or are you wanting to buy hard cast bullets.

I thought about casting my own. All I have left at present are wheel weights and I really don't want to depend on them. My 20/1 for the 45/70 Sharps, I would guess, is too soft. Unless someone tells me different, I'll go with the Laser Cast in 300 grain. Thanks everyone, Gary

I have used the .432/280 LFN by LBT cast from water-dropped wheel weights in my Ruger SBH .44Mag on those puny black bears in the Adirondacks and even bigger wild hogs in Central Florida. Driven to 1250 fps they penetrate from one end to out the other with considerable organ damage along the way. Way better than 12 gauge slugs. Beartooth bullets sells these in several diameters to match your gun. Go with the gas-checked ones which will give better accuracy than plain base at the higher velocities.

WWts will be fine.

Me, I would use what was affordable in large quantities and PRACTICE, Practice, practice.....
I cast the RD 265, and have shot hundreds maybe 1 or 2 thousand, with 17.4 WC820;
I do not vary the load because I am a woosey and have found the comfort level that I actually like shooting these loads instead of painful loads of 45ACP with BE:)
Seriously, buy or cast and shoot, shoot, shoot,.
