View Full Version : Running out of room in the 10mm case

I'm shooting the RCBS 200 grain 10mm bullet and am trying to work up to the Speer loadbook max of 14.0 grains of AA #9 in new Starline brass. The only problem is that I run out of room in the case before I can stuff the full powder charge inside. The bullet bottoms out on the powder charge before the LOA is short enough to fit in my Glock 20 magazine. This is in new brass, so it's probably a little higher capacity than it would be after full length resizing.

This is the bullet:

I saw recently that Double Tap is selling a 10mm loaded round with a 230 hard cast bullet at around 1100 fps. I wonder how they find enough room in the case and what powder they use? I also wonder who makes the mold?

I'm thinking of designing a bullet that maximizes the about of lead in the nose, like maybe a tangential ogive with an 80% meplat. Anybody have a link to a heavy (200 gr or higher) 10mm mold they like?

I just checked my manual and 10.6 of AA#7 is max for a 200gr jacketed bullet.

True the above. FYI, there isn't necessarily a problem compressing slow powders. You just have to work it up & watch for pressure signs. Keep in mind when looking for data, lead do NOT load w/ jacketed data. You will get pressure problems doing so.

Switch to a faster powder, or new #9. My #9 is older, and bulkier and slower than the newest stuff.

Best for heavy boolits is a custom mold, not many stock ones around. The faster powders take less room, so is more forgiving of boolit length.

Check out my group buy. Its exactly what you're asking for. Gonna be made by MP molds / Miha. 4-cav in brass. 200gr WFN.

I'm using #9. The 14 grain figure is from the Speer manual. I think it's the 13th edition--I'm not at home to check.

Since Speer does NOT show a lead bullet, you should NOT be using jacketed data. You will be over pressure.

Since a lead bullet has much less resistance to engraving by the rifling, it is fine to use jacketed data. The same is stated in Speer #12.

Fred, on that one you are dead wrong. Lead offers less resistance and so provides lower pressures in a given load than a condom bullet. If Speer did not list that load as a compressed load they should have.

Agree all cast loads are safe weight by weight for jacketed and produce lower pressures. I also use AA-9 and 200gr boolits in 10mm. Cleanest burning powder I've ever used. My new starline cases come out as clean inside as they were before loading.
