My kid (turns 50 on the 9th) phoned last night and asked if the mould I have RCBS 41-210 would cast slugs for his 410. I do not play around with shotguns at all so I didn't know, so will it work???

hmm in the wad i'm gonna assume.
send him a couple to push down the bbl inside the wad that will answer his questions instantly.

No. Unless he has a rifled barrel. The 410 cal boolit would fit the main barrel, but be way too tight in the choke. Rifled barrels have no choke. The bare boolit, (not one inside a wad), would need to be lubed and pushed by some sort of hard card wad. Also, some sort of plastic over powder wad under the card wad to help seal the bore. Then be roll crimped.

Slug loads for smooth bore shotguns are hollow based so they fly like a shuttle cock in bad mitten. They are also quite soft so they deform easily when forced through a choke.

Ballistic products has special "stump" wads for composite loads in .410.
