It makes me realize how far out of touch with basic life skills we modern day people are. Boy if/when the SHTF, we are in big trouble. How will we survive?

Sorry I did not realize it was not the full video. I will keep searching to find it, it's out there somewhere.

ExtraTorrent DOT com has the full video
do a google search "PBS Alone in the Wilderness "
and ExtraTorrent will probably be the first listing.

I would post the actual link, but it came up with advertising that's nearly rated X
and other unsavory Pop-ups...think the oldest occupation.

And actually, I wouldn't be surprised if ExtraTorrent is on the same lines as the old Napster ???

Go there at your own risk.
Jon

PS "Alone in the Wilderness" is a great show, spellbinding even if you've seen it many times before...it's the life the typical boolit caster would dream of...at least I would !
If you get a chance to watch it on PBS (usually on during pledge week) DO IT !

Jon B is correct. Chanel 2 our educational channel airs both series every couple of years during there fund drive.
His level of wood craftsmanship is fa-nominal. He filmed how he made the hinges for his cabin door out of raw wood. All he had to work with was the simplest tool. Ax, handsaw, adz, auger drill.
He documented about 20 some years living off of the land on film. Both stills and movie. I also believe he wrote 2 books during those years.

I bet you can still order the video from your local PBS station. Make sure to get both parts 1 and 2.

Yeah. Just do a google for "Alone in the wilderness". Lots of "free" links pop up and it's available on PBS.

Great vid. My Dad has it and I borrow it from time to time. I think he was a Seabee in WW2. Dick Proenehke's bio says he was a carpenter for the Navy during WW2. That would lead me to believe he was a Bee. Funny thing is I was in the Seabees in the 90s and we were using some of the same tools he used in the video.....

My dad and grandfather lived that life in Northern Alberta in the 1930s. They built all of their buildings from logs and my grandfather was a blacksmith who built the tools they needed from scrap iron.

Their first cabin built in 1929, note the dovetail corners..
