I am wanting to load some cast boolits into 308 but to stay under the OAL and to keep the gas check in the neck I would not be able to hit the crimp groove. In fact, one lube groove would be exposed. These weigh in at 173 grain with lube and GC from an "NEI 178 308" mold. Is this ok?

I think it'll be fine.

see the middle one? that works for me just fine, lube groove exposed and GC below the neck, best of both worlds. :)

But I heard the the world would end if your gas check was below the neck? Oh well, 2013 is almost here anyhow. The lube won't get blasted from the groove and the gas check won't pop off?

All I know is I do the same thing in my 30-06, GC below the neck, and I've never had any problems, and that rifle shoots them very accurately that way.

These are crimp on GC's not the slip on type.

I regularly leave one or more lube grooves exposed when seating my boolits. I try to keep the GC even with the neck of the case.

I have been casting and loading for the 300 Win Mag...and it has one of the shortest necks I have ever seen. I have not had any issues with seating below the neck, my gas checks are firmly seated. Also, I do not believe the lube is being "blown off" as I am getting superb accuracy and zero leading. I too load as Blammer shows in his pics...one lube groove exposed, and one below the neck. No problems here, lube is 2500+ from White Label.

I don't know about "Gas check below the neck" But Blammer's middle load looks exactly like my .30-30 loads. I have been loading them like that since around 1970 and have never had any trouble with the exposed lube.

I do keep them in the 20 round plastic boxes so they don't get dirty.

i just wipe the lube out of the exposed grooves.
one groove full is generally plenty, and the groove and gas check area is definatly plenty.
