I have 231 and AA#7 on hand. Small pistol and small pistol magnum primers on hand. Looking for both .38 and .357. Moderate to heavy preferred. Thanks in advance.

mxjunky78;
Look up AA's and Hodgdon's data on line. They have all of the info you'll need with those powders and your bullet. And-d-d, it'll be CORRECT data.

that 231 will work for both .38 and the .357 for that boolit! Thats a GREAT boolit too. You will have to seat over the front driving band when you load .357.

Not to be argumentative, but it depends on which .357 revolver you have (regarding bullet length). My "L" Frame S&W 686's handle it nicely, using the crimp groove. If you have an "N" frame Model 27 or 28, maybe not...

Lefty's other points are right on point.

Good to know, I don't own any S&W's YET! My only .357 is a GP100, FOR NOW! LOL

Actually I compete with that 358311 although my mold has been modified slightly. My match load is a 3.6gr of HP-38. Its supposedly the same as 231. The load isn't anything WILD for .38spl but its a good training load if nothing else. Then again in a light weight snubby, then it comes to life! LOL

How can you get a good roll crimp seating above?

I was thinking the Lyman358311 is a wadcutter. IF that's the case, the roll crimp procedure would be the same as with any other boolit..... enjoy Mike

It's my understanding that it's a round nose.

Its a 160gr RN design. I like it for 38Spl loads myself.

That is the standard 158 gr RN .38 bullet that pretty much matches the original .38 factory load.

Got one, like it in .38, easy to reload gun from speed loader, but not really terminally effective on meat. It's also easy to work up load that hits to POA in many fixed sight snubbies.

I Ike Unique, but Red Dot, bullseye, and 231 work fine also.

Bullseye, Unique, 231 and 700X work well with this bullet in 38 special.

Is anyone using this in .357? I'm thinking I'll just stay with .38 on this one.

Yes, I use the 358311 HP and other similar weight boolits like 358156 (I really like that one and the RCBS that looks like it) and others in .357. One of my favorite loads was 10.0/HS7, but alas I am almost out and no more on the horizon unless I can find some at a swap meet or hiding on a shelf at a gun shop or hardware store. Therefore, I substituted (surplus) AA7, adjusted the charge a little, and got acceptable results. I can shoot in my back yard and I have a chrono. I test all my loads before deciding on some loads as 'goto'. Just because these loads work for me, they may not for you. Do your own workups.

In 38 Spl I use mostly 148 WC and 358477 over BE, RD, GD, 231, Unique, whatever I have that works.

The Lyman cast bullet handbook has all kinds of loads for it in .357. Tho only down side of a RN is hunting and target scoring. Cans, clay pigeons, steel swingers don't have a clue as to what hit them. The 358311 is a very accurate bullet and probably more accurate than a large percentage of SWC's out there. I have the H&G #39 which is a RN 158 gr bullet very similar to the 358311. At magnum or .38 spl speeds I'll put it up against any plain base swc for accuracy in rifle or handgun. RN's are just not "sexy" to most people but they do shoot well.

It will depend on the length of you sixguns cylinder, they are not the same.

If I could pick up a DC 358311 for a fair price I'd like to try doing a sliding bar type double HP on it. Did that to a DC 452374 and it came out nice, I'm thinking a flat point and HP at about 140-145 grs with enough smooth shoulder to load easily into a revolver. I like SWCs but honestly they just don't load smoothly for me, especially five or six at a time.
