I had an Uncle who served in the AAF in WWII. He flew out of Italy in a B-24. He made one too many runs over Poesti and got shot down.

He then spent the rest of the war in a POW camp in Germany. There he went from a 250# and 6'3" man to a skeleton who upon his release at the end of war could not even go home until he recuperated from his near starvation and abuse at the hands of the Nazi regime.

When he entered the hospital he was only 117 lbs and could not walk. He eventually regained his health and joined the NYCPD in 1947 and acheived the rank of Detective.

He retired in 1972 and only a month later died from a massive coronory while driving his car.

He found the courage to drive to side of the road. Park his car and died alone.....

He will always be remembered.
