View Full Version : Danger of sticking a boolit?

I have been loading 5 grains of Red Dot under a RD PB 432265 (44 mag brass) for a lighter target load in my 44 mag revolver. I would like to give it a try in my Rossi 92 with a 20 inch barrel. Is this wise or is there a danger of sticking the boolit? I do not have a chrono yet...

I realize that I may also need to push the boolit faster to get it to stabilize with the 1/30", but I will cross that bridge when I get there...

Take a chunk of sturdy brass rod longer than the barrel and a decent size hammer just in case.

Only your rifle knows. Just make sure you can see an impact til you are certain. Only takes one stuck bullet to make a mess of a gun.

That is a valid concern. Right after I started reloading I didn't have any shell holders or anything. I was hand weighing powder into cases, then putting the boolit in and seating it.

Somehow I missed one of the powder charges. I was out shooting one day and heard a dull "pop". And sure enough, the primer had enough power to send it about halfway down the barrel of my Smith. It knocked right out again, but had I pulled the trigger again, that would have blown it up for sure. Very glad I was not trying to practice "controlled pairs" or double taps that time--I'm pretty sure I would have missed it and "pop BOOM!!" My quality control is MUCH higher these days.

5 grains of RD will get it out of the barrel, probably 800-1000 fps.

I shoot 4.0 of RD with a 260 RNFP stuffed in 45C case as my standard CAS load, fired in a 24"
Marlin and Rossi 20" and 24", this load does about 850 in the 20"
Been using it for 20+ years

I shoot 5gr Red Dot with a Lee TL430-240-SWC, and have never had a boolit stick...

YMMV

When I firelapped my 357 M92, I used 1.0 gr Bullseye and a 358477. Went about 1.5 inches into the dirt at my feet. Doesn't take much to get out of the barrel.

Stable flight is a whole 'nother kettle of fish.
