I know this may be odd. However I found a turkey fryer one that goes up to 800 would that work for lead? At least until I can get a better one?

I don't think the therrmometer can tell the difference between lead and turkey oil. Don't see why it won't work.

From the info ive gathered the best i can tell is a thermometer is most accurate in its mid range.I think you needed one that would go higher like say 1000 degrees but the hobby only requires 600-700 degrees. Some molds like to be fed hot so 800 degrees would be maxing the thermometr out and you wouldnt no for sure where you were. But the thermometr you have will prolly work, try it and see.NEVER CAN HAVE TOO MANY THERMOMETERS LOL.I'm new I dont know what to do really just getting my feet wet.More knowleged than I will most likly have the answer.:ater:2 drunk buddies:

Cheap ones are most accurate in their midrange. A quality one will be accurate across the entire range. Since we don't need total precision the one you suggested will work just fine until you get a better one.

Yea I plan on getting one of those from the other post. However I am limited this weekend since I am having to buy the pot and molds and all that stuff. So I was thinking that if that other one works for at least till next pay day then it would be ok. I know buy once cry once and am ok with that. It's the wife that is freaked out buy my spending right now. Thank you all again for the quick replies.
