Went to the gun show today and I seen this Lyman 311 41 HP GC mold sitting there with handles.

Asked how much - Well I brought it home. Had some minor rust on the out side and some surface rust on one side of the cavity. Any Ideas on how much it is worth? I know Lyman doesn't catalog it any more.

The only thing missing was the spure plate set screw.

Cleaned it up and cast a few with it. 165 grains and 312+ on all bands.

Only problem now is I don't load any 30 cal!

Well then, you don't need that old thing taking up space and brain-purpose... Just mail it to me and I'll send you a check!

Or contact me via e-mail as that is one I am looking for.

You say you don't load for .30. I didn't hear you say that you don't own .30. Seems to me you should dig some of those .30 cases out and give it a spin. Or sell the mold on E-bay for a scandalous amount of money. You can do that anytime however. Try it first, you might like it.

I would guess its probably worth close to a 100 bucks on ebay.

I thought it was illegal to not own a 30 cal rifle. At least, if you are a member of this board. Was going to make a crack about retired military not having a 30 cal rifle then realized that you may never have had an M14 while in the military. Time goes by way too fast.

Was going to make a crack about retired military not having a 30 cal rifle then realized that you may never have had an M14 while in the military.

When I was just a young pup Marines shot M1's, M-14's and M-16's. Shot intermural with the M1, qualified with the M-14 until 74 then went to the Mattie Matel for Qual.

I said I didn't LOAD for 30, didn't say I didn't own one, got 3 30 cal, Mod 70, 30/06, bought in 69, then I have a HR 'Topper' 30-30 and a Savage Mod 24 12 ga./30-30.

I had a good deal on 30/06 some Fed premium's - 180gr Nosler Partion, about 25 boxes at $9.00 a box and about 25 boxes of Rem 180gr Corelock about 10 years ago. I don't shoot the 30/06 enough to worry about reloading it. I do have dies.

The 30/30's use to be so cheap, $7.00 or so a box, I still have bunch of them too and I don't shoot them any more either.

Just for S&G I am going to cast up a bunch of them and try them in the H&R Topper, it normally shoots J's in sub 2 MOA - should be able to beat that easily.

MGySgt, What is the nose diameter on that little hollerhead? I've heard that it makes a huge entrance wound in a deer. -JDL

JDL - Not sure what yoiu are askng but the nose is .500, the HP is about .400 deep and the Meplate is .190

I don't see how that thing can penetrate very deep without blowing up.

IMHO - I think if I was going to hunt with it I would use 20 to 1 and forget about trying to use WW.

By god Sarge ,YOU ARE HOOKED! Bought a mold and don't even load for the caliber!! After you see how this thing works ,I'm betting there's gonna be a few MORE 30 molds on your shelf. Wouldn't WW be a bit harder than 20-1? YOU COULD send it to buckshot and have a shorter pin made up.It would be a bit heavier and expansion would not be as great or violent.

Wouldn't WW be a bit harder than 20-1? ..................

That is where the problem would be (I think) with WW I think the mushroom would just break off, the antinium would make it a little too brittle with the thin walls of the nose.

20-1 would be much more ductable and MAY stay on the shank.

I thought about sending it to Buckshot for an 'Adjustable' pin.

But then again I broke out a 44 mold I plum forgot I had tonight and cast some of those up, 300 gr GC MM RNFP about 75% Meplate.

I got to quit horsing around with the lite stuff and get my load for CO and ELK - unless of course I decide to take the 475 Linebaugh, but that still have some work on that too! LBT 400 WFN GC

Which 45 - 45/70 or 45/90 - if 45/70 which one? which boolit? RD 360 GC, MM430 GC (took 2 elk with that one) RD 430Gr - or my MM450 gr?

What pleasant decisions to make!
