Spent March building a new 10x20 foot "Bullet FactoryII" next to the garage. Got it wired and the loft built and all of Mamma's "stuff" up there out of sight. Finally got a decent 25lb spring scale this morning and got started weighing ingots of lead to made a couple hundred pounds of 20:1 for my Sharps...Quigley is only five weeks away. Built a new 38-90 fir this summers shooting. 210lbs of 8lb ingots is a nice pile, and stacks well. Tomorrow we do about six five gallon buckets of WW...then to get started actually making boolits! Ah Nirvana!

Just felt so good to get going I had to share...

:castmine: really, I do!!

Rich...I never heard of a 38-90....A picture of the cart. and rifle would be nice if you are so inclined...:)
After thought...got to thinking Rich, that case must be aleast 3 1/2" long if it is a straight case....40-90SS is 3 1/4"........

Nrut,

close...but no cigar! The original 38-90-217 was an express load. Winchester sold rifles and ammunition in europe about 1890-? The germans took the case and necked it down .009" to create their beloved 9.3(aka .366")x74R. I just necked it back up to .38 caliber for my Sharps. I have a 1:12" twist Krieger barrel and a brand shiny new Brooks mould that casts a 375gr bullet out of 20:1 alloy. The case holds about 85gr of 3F and cranks it nearly 1600fps in initial testing. The BC is over .5, but I need to do some more chronographing to see just what it is.

Hey Rich:

Those large milk crates hold 728 1# ingots IF you stack them neatly.

Your right no Cigar!...I discounted the 9.3X74R because it has as you say a 2.92" long case and I did'nt think it would hold 90grs. of Black and my RWS 9.3X74R rounds (awaiting the fall arrival of a Ruger #1 in 74R) are only slightly larger in base dia. than my 40-90SS brass...
I was wondering the history behind the 74R case as I have not been able to find much on it....Had no clue that it started out as a Winchester .380 ......sounds like you are having way to much fun!:-D
Edit...another after thought....you would'nt have had anything to do with the development of the 6.5 Banshee?........Cigar?

I'm not sure the Winchester .380 had much, if anything, to do with the development of the 9.3X74R. It was developed in Germany as a response to the British .375 Flanged Magnum for use in single shot, combo, drillings, and double rifles. I'm not saying the .380 wasn't the parent, but I kinda doubt it as the Germans could have made any case they desired. I do know that there is no other case that you can use to form/make the 9.3X74R. The only good news is that American shooters appear to be figuring out that it is actually a pretty good cartridge in its own right and thus more dealers are carrying the ammunition/brass. In addition, Hornady should be releasing both the 9.3X74R and 450/400 - 3" loads soon. I understand from those that have seen the 9.3X74R brass that it appears to be good stuff. Pilgrim
