View Full Version : One more boolit sizing question....

I recently acquired another Mosin Nagant 91/30. My first one slugs at 310, and I have been sizing to .311 with very good results.

The New Mosin slugs at .313. A newly aquired Lee C312-185-1R mold is dropping boolits at .315 with Lyman #2 Alloy.

My question is: Can I just barely seat the gas check with my .311 sizer (RCBS Lam2), and not size the entire boolit? I can hand lube with 2500+. I do not currently have a .314 sizer.

Does this make sense to try this?

Thanks...Shooter

should be able to.
they make a gas check installer thingy airc.
i'd be saving for a sizer though as you'll get tired of that soon enough.

Gas blow by will happen on the GC portion of the boolit which defeats the purpose of the GC entirely if your bore is .313 and you are sizing the GC or base of the boolit to .311. I suppose you could size down only far enough to keep the GC portion at or slightly over the bores diameter but I imagine it would be a PITA.

Yes, it is a PITA. I will be looking for a .314 sizer....thanks.

The Lyman GC seater blocks the bottom of the plunger so that the boolit doesn't actually enter the die. This is doable if you have one of those.

Yes, but as you mention the hand lubing is a PITA. Pan lubing is a little easier. Look for the .314 sizer.........

I would take 20 unsized boolits and tumble lube twice with LLA. Load up 20 rounds and shoot them. You may not need a gas check.

I did the same thing when using .316 dia bullet in a Mosin but used a .314 die to seat the checks. They shot well but it was slow.

NOE (Night Owl Enterprises) sells gas check seating dies for $20; check him out.
