I had Erik Ohlen make me a base plug for a Lyman 57730 that i bought without a plug.He used his "inset bar" conversion and man is it nice! it is listed at about 560g but i guessed wrong at the depth/shape of the plug and it now goes 635g.That would be fine except unlike my other Lyman 58 cal minie molds that cast small this one casts .580-.581 and is too big for my .577 Parker Hale barrels.I'll send 20 for someone to test is US replica type Zoave that usually will like the bigger bullet.I am interested how accurate it is but have no gun to test it.Maybe a 58 TC or Investarms with a 1-48 would be interesting.

................May not be stable in most common 58 cal musket twists. I've shot 624gr Minie' boolits in my P58 Enfield (48" twist) very accurately, but NOT in a P53 or 1861 Springfield.

Harry,
The Investarms 58 and my Zoli "Buffalo Hunter" have a larger bores than my Zoli Zouave & Musketoon. I would need to know what powder charge you were thinking of: hunting vs targets. The thickness of the skirt will have a major bearing on the use of the slug. My 577611 & 575213-Old Style molds throw thick skirted minies that I shoot with 90grs powder for hunting but they will only fit the tighter guns. Other molds are too thin skirted to shoot accurately with those charges. I have other oversized molds but haven't gotten out to test them yet.

The mold is thick skirt and shallow cavity. That’s why it’s a heavy pig. I may just beat it down the bore with a starter and see how it does with my PH .577 1858 Musket

I have a 750gr .577 flat base mold with grease grooves if you really want to get adventurous Harry.

If it would fit the rifle i'd do it. A buddy I knew had a .58 cal slug gun that shot a 2 piece swaged 700 some grain bullet. But the rifle was 40#.These was an article in Handloader? about the same type rifle 20 years back.

I don't have a US made Zouave. Both the Zouave and "sporterized Zouave" (Buffalo Hunter) are made by Antonio Zoli in Italy. The Investarms 58 is a possibility though. What kind of powder charges were you considering? You could send me ONE slug (a reject with a bubble in the hollow base would be OK) to see what kind of fit it would be to my rifles. I would mail you any targets if the minie fit but there no point in sending a bunch it it's a no go from the start. PM me if you'd like.

you can get a sizer and size it down. I cast 580's and size them down to 576 w/ no problem. S & S firearms and northeast trader has them.

I thought about sizing them down but I sold my .575 sizer a month before I got my Parker Hale 1858. I guess I could order another.

Been trying an Eric mod .58 minie in a rebored Renegade. Sizing to make the hind end small enough to load as a maxiball and the front half engrave on the rifling. Just a thought but it might work OK with that heavy guy.

With the progressive rifling depth of my .577 Parkers its pretty tight up front.I may just order a sizing die and give it a whirl.I need to try it out somehow.
