View Full Version : Pull them?

I loaded 20 rounds of 38 spl with my 357 load data [smilie=b:

158 grain RNFP with 4.7 grains 700x
Needed to be 3.2 grains 700x
5.5 grains is max for 357

These that were for a 1872 open top 38 spl

Pull them?

Or shoot in a 357 only? (Revolver, lever rifle, or bolt action rifle)

Or just shoot them in anything they fit

Shoot 'em in your .357...

If you don't have a .357, pull them!

I hate to pull cast boolits. If you don't have a 357 to shoot them out of now you have the best excuse to get one.

PULL THEM!
Why risk injury? The smaller case capacity will raise pressures.
15 minutes pulling them might just save a life time of blindness or worse.
Remember, Death is final.

Agreed. Unless the OAL is the same as a .357 load pressures will be way up by the deeper seated boolit. Better to lose 20 rounds than an eye, you're only issued two of them!

I'd shoot them in a .357, they are no where near max for that cartridge.

""But it ain't that cartridge""
I wouldn't shoot a 44 mag load in a 44 Spl.
Pull the 20, a headache is when you got over a huned to pull.

Really, what is the big problem? You have a few mild .357 loads in a .38 case AND YOU KNOW IT. So please explain to me what the problem is to fire those cartridges in a .357 gun. They might run in the 28-30K range pressure range. If you can safely fire 38-40K PSI .357 mag loads in a .357 gun why not these?? Just because they are in .38 cases does not turn them into bombs.

I would look at the charts for a 38 and see if it is a over charge on a 38 then decide from there. You know all the variables so start there. Pulling twenty ain't all that many.

Whatever you do, don't destroy that open top!

+1. I don't know why this is even a debate, that is a GROSS OVERLOAD in a .38 Special. Extrapolate the pressures, even assuming linear, for the .38 Special load data and you really, actually COULD blow the cylinder on that Open Top, bend the cylinder base pin, damage the barrel wedge, split the forcing cone, or who knows what else. Keep in mind there is no top strap to protect you if it goes, or to brace the recoil shield.

To put it in perspective, three grains of 700X is getting near the top of .38 Special pressures. 4.7 grains is a significant overcharge. In the shorter Special, case, I wouldn't shoot them in a .357 magnum, either.

Not much data for 700x and heavy .38 boolits, ever wonder why that is?

20 rounds !Pull them, I did 300 45ACP to hot and pulled all of them, not near as expensive as my hand or eye.

As per my IMR hand loader guide for 38 spl

158 gr LRN 3.6 gr 700x is 790 fps and 15800
158 gr LRN 3.0 gr 700x is 740 fps and 11700

I have a Ruger 77/357 I could have shot these in but I pulled them for safety sake.

I didnt want to take the chance

I am sure glad I double and triple check everything.
Would wanted to shoot those in my open tops.
Took me 9 mo to get the pair in nickle

Smart move. I was checking the books and you would have been well into the unknown. Best to not let curiosity kill the cat as it is said.

These 1872s sure are pretty guns

They have 1871 and 1872 patents on them but have 1871 near wedge
Call Taylor they had some old stock 1872 and new stock that are all marked the same way

Also the are 3 serial # apart.
I could wait another 9mo or keep these.
They apologized told me Uberti does this all the time.

One guy waited 2 years. Then Uberti sent them and they weren't consecutive.

I have a pair of blued ones in .45 Colt that are three numbers apart, didn't ask for it, just ordered a pair through Stoeger and that's what I got.
