Anybody shooting RCBS 243-095 from a 1:12" twist?

Thanks for the info...

Apparently nobody...

OK, how does RCBS 243-095 shoot from your faster twist guns?

Awesome. Is that a factory gun? Would it be a 244 Remington? I'd love to see some 100 yard targets, if possible.

A little more detail would be helpful.

Hello, Marlin Junky. I have the RCBS 243-095..but I have not got around to using it yet..I have been using the Lyman 245498..which Lyman says is 99grs..mine drop at 100grs. with my softer alloy.
I am shooting it in a 7 1/2" twist 1895 Winchester-Lee .236 Navy (6mm) straight-pull sporting rifle. I found best accuracy with either 10.0grs. H4227, or 10.0 grs. TrailBoss powders.

It works great in my Howa - factory barrel 1:9 rechambered to 243 AI. 10.0gr. Green Dot or 10.5gr. AA#2 is good for about 1800 fps and MOA groups. Cast from water quenched wheelweights and gas checked.

Then there's also RCBS 24-100 which Midway offers as a special order mold. I wonder what that one looks like (no picture to be found anywhere).

MJ

P.S. Actually, is this what the 24-100-FN looks like? I found a pic on an auction site (auction was closed) but it looks like the spitting image of 25-100-FN.

It doesn't stablize (slight keyhole at 50 yds). The 85 gr. saeco and 85 gr Lyman (Loverin) both shorter in length do stablize and shoot well. The factor is length in my rifle.

Ruger makes/made a slow twist .243/6mm? Do you know what the twist is? What's the chambering?

Our 1/9 and 1/10 twist rifles sure like the 95gr SP boolit. 3/4" at 100yds.
When we go p-dog hunting the wife wont hardly use anything else. She loves that loves that boolit. I dont know what twist my brothers Ruger is, but it shoots it good too.

HP with a 1/16 drill bit, 3/8 deep and it makes very big holes in varmints.

Are you talkin' .243 or 6mm Rem? At what velocity levels are you able to maintain that level of accuracy?

I think its around 1770fps. Dont remember for sure.
I found this right off the bat with 15.5gr IMR4198 and 2400 powder, so I never tried any faster loads.

I almost forgot that I put .3gr poly in the case with 4198.

There's a big difference between IMR4198 and 2400. With an overall cartridge length of 2.75" and a .960" long, 95 grain RCBS 243-095, QuickLoad indicates 1600 fps with 4198 and 2000 fps with 2400. This from a 22" barrel.

I went and checked.
The 15.5gr 4198 and .3gr poly was 1770 fps. The barrels were 22".

I was wrong about the 2400. It was only 14gr and the speed was 1736 fps.
And the barrel was shorter than 22". I think 20".

Yes it is. I shoot at steel plates --200~300 yards. On a good day I can hit a 3" plate with every shot. I have not shot paper in a long time--last time I did i was getting 1~1.33" groups at 100 yards. The secret is to load long so they just engage the Leade. Took me awhile to discover that...I load each round single shot.

Wally,

Just out of curiosity, have you ever actually measured the twist? I'm just wondering if there might be a possibility that you may have a rare 244 Remington with a faster twist because you're just about the only one that's ever been able to stabilize RCBS 243-095 at that low velocity.

MJ

P.S. I just discovered today that the 244 (I believe in both the model 722 & 700) was revised in 1958 to a 1 in 9 twist so that it would stabilize a 100 Gr spitzer bullet prior to the name change to 6mm Remington.
