Pretty amazing! But when they talk of these guys migrating to Mexico, surely they don't mean the same individual bird making the trip, right? I assume it is succeeding generations that survive making the journey.

No they fly it solo every year! But it's not a non stop flight they follow the weather as it gets colder and the natural food sources are consumed and the flowers die off ,they will fly south to warmer climates, where the food is still there .The migration is continous not all at once.

I have had Ruby throats feed at our feeders when early snows fly in Nov. and some fly north into late March and April snows.

they ride south. They dont fly. catch a ride on a goose and get under the feathers to stay warm
I have 2 feeders I fill morning and evening everyday as many as 30 come and if feeder is low they will look in window
I have been going through about 5 lbs sugar in 2 weeks

I've seen them do that at my feeders as well! I swear they tap on the window when the feeder is empty!

I want to know the physics of a feeder, why doesn't all the liquid run right out? Is it due to a vacuum above the fluid? I just threw a feeder out because it would NOT retain the liquid, it just ran out through the phoney flowers.

What an utter delight! We feed the little guys here, they do get a mite possessive--so we have 3 small feeders spread out through the patio to keep fights at a minimum.

I have 3 (1quart) feeders on my front porch and I lost count trying to see how many but between 50 and 60 at a time, they will enpty the feeders in 2-3 days. I make my own feed, in a 1 quart measuring glass I use 2 cups regular sugar anf fill with water, stur and micro wave 5 minutes or to boil ( makes sinple syrup), let cool and fill feeder, no red die!!
I take the feeders down towards the end of sept. so the birds will leave on their journey.
